What time of year to visit Eastern States?

Hi Folks.  We're Westies who have travelled a lot through the various Eastern States, but always in the comfort of plane,  car, hotel, motel

Now that we're retired nomads (neither of us are grey as we both dye or hair - trying to hang on to some vestige of youth - but when I look down my chest hair is not all balck anymore lol) we are spending most of our year on the road.

We've just finished 4 mnths touring some of our home State (WA) and intend to head off from Perth and cross the Nullabor into SA sometime next February.  We want to travel round the coast of SA and then head north slowly ending up in QLD.

Putting aside all the bush fires and wild storms the long suffering Easties are having to put up with, GENERALLY SPEAKING, when is the best time of the year to do SA, VIC, NSW, ACT (we can handle the winter snow - just) and QLD?

Just looking for some advice and accept that you cant predict the fires and unusual weather we now seem to be suffering.

Thanks

Hi there Bruce or Bev (I am hoping it is Bruce lol) , your timing should be quite ok.

It will still be a bit warm going across SA but as you move further north you will be getting into winter , depending just HOW slowly you intend to travel, and the weather will be great.

Assuming you are in a caravan you will have all the creature comforts, heater & a/c if you find you need them.

We are heading across the Nullarbor AGAIN, late January / early February to catch up with family over there.

Enjoy your trip.

If this is a year when you get hot easterlies I would hang low in W.A, till they ease off somewhat and by then the worst of the severe heat that S.A/ Vic get should also be easing off

March , April and May is the best time of the year anywhere on the southern coast. Yes it can get cold but can also be beautiful with minimal wind. Feb can be a bit hot in SA so I'd stick to the coast if you can't avoid Feb travel and be prepared to use the aircon if needed.
We love outback QLD - from May onwards but unless they get some drought breaking rain many of the weirs, rivers and waterholes will be dry so the coast might be a better option.

You'll have a hot trip across the Eyre highway in Feb. We did it this year, stayed at a couple of caravan parks to use the air-con, and all well.
Stay on the coast in SA if you're there in Feb, then go slowly across the Great Ocean Road in Victoria for continued comfortable (mostly) weather. Don't go north or inland until into March.

G'day Bruce & Bev, Give southern Victoria a bit of time. Obviously best seen after the rush of school holidays and Easter. There "usually" is wonderful calm weather through March, April and May. (No grief from you in other states! Yes, Yes, we can have 4 seasons in one day, but, lots of times we have superb weather.) There is a lovely coast to explore which includes Phillip Island, Kilcunda, Inverloch, Cape Patterson, Wilsons Prom, and so many places to slip into all around the coast such as Painsville, Metung, Bemm River, Mallacoota/Gypsy Point and lots of places in between.
If you decide to come this way (we are at Inverloch) we can offer a lot more advice. A detour around Lakes Entrance will take you through Bruthen on your way around to NSW. If you do that make sure your meat supplies are low as you will not buy better meat than you get at the Bruthen Butchers. Most of the meat comes from his dad's property we're told. Good pies in the bakery too.
The Great Ocean Road around the coast from SA is just great too. If we can offer more advice don't hesitate to get in touch. Cheers, Bob & Pauline

Folks. Thanks so much for all that info - we especially appreciate some of the more detailed info, like particular areas to go to and Bob and Pauline - we'll try to find that Butcher!

This is what is great about our Forum - you guys have taken the time to give us good advice and info that we would otherwise never find out.

Please...........if any of you have more ideas and suggestions, keep them coming - we will be writing them down in our travel bucket list book

Hi B&B

It's beautiful in Queensland from January through to December, better from March to October and perfect from April to September! Don't let any talk of drought put you off visiting any part of outback Oz .. those folk out there need all the support we can offer during those times; that's why grey nomads are so much appreciated. Anyway it's bound to rain before you get here so then the country will be even more beautiful.

You've already got the main message .. don't hurry, travel at a relaxed pace, you may not be able to come again to catch up on what you miss by rushing.

When you say "ending up in Queensland" .. are you migrating? We can thoroughly recommend the idea!

On the other hand, you know how big the state is, so you'll have no trouble filling the middle six months of the year on tour here.

When you have a time frame we'd be happy to help with a suggested programme.

Safe travels   Fried Rice.

Travelling your own state should have given you a good guide for travelling the east. Just compare places on the east coast with places of the same latitude on the west coast. The climates are similar. Also the areas over 300 km from the coast are similar, keep away from them in the summer.
