Denbil, I have a small (can lift it with two fingers) machine I bought in Spotlight. It is called an Opal by Elna , cost $129 and came with a 5 year warranty (bought it back in 2010)

The machine runs on 240vm but we have a 12v adaptor. Does straight stitch and zigzag - all we need for minor repairs and projects.

Have hemmed denim jeans, repaired sheets, and made a cover for our tool box out of foam. Works fine, does not take up much room

Hi Alison. I saw a lady at the markets in Tamworth embroidering names and phone number on dog collars. I brought one for around $25 dollars. They supplied the collars and embroidered with fluro orange color. The collars were good quality. Lots of dogs traveling around. Just an idea. Cheers Val

Saw the little machines in Spotlight. They were on special for $50. Would have bought one but have just been given a little one which will do in the van. I did take my machine on one of our trips. Set it up in the annexe. Was making shopping bags to sell at market. The embroidery attachment is too big to justify taking it. I was also told to be careful with a digital machine. Use a surge protector and if using an inverter make sure it is a pure sine wave. Some women buy a cheaper older style machine to take with them on the road.

Tried the little machine out with my granddaughter the other day. Even the 9yr wasn't impressed. Too fiddly. Thread kept breaking , no variation in speed. It was either stop or go. Put her on my good machine and she took off like a pro. making 4 drawstring bags for the afternoon.

The Dee of our Jay&Dee bought one of those small machines from Spotlight. Does not do what she hoped.
Soooooo... we are taking her Janome computerised machine with us this trip.
Will have to sacrifice something else to balance the weight.
She will have to check with Janome and see if using the inverter or even the gennie when bush camping will do any damage to the computer system of the machine.
If you know the answer to this then let's know please.
