Hi Everyone, looking for suggestions. We have bought those big plastic boxes to store winter clothes and blankets in. We want to store them in the back of the Colorado in the canopy section. We are on a farm at the moment and find the dust gets into the canopy section. The plastic containers have a little space between the lid and the bottom section even when clipped closed. Any suggestions on how we can stop dust getting in. thanks.
if you don't intend to open the containers for a while, gaffa tape is great (and fairly cheap from Bunnings). It comes in rolls of different width and length - get the widest so you can wrap the tape from the lid right over the lip of the box. But be aware it sticks well, so leave a twist end so its easier to get off when you need to open it. Don't try to re-use the tape - its too sticky and will make a mess of you, the container and the contents. If youre careful, you can put tape along one of the longest side and use it as a hinge. Then you tape down the test of the lid which you will throw away. You may find that you will not need to put tape completely around the lid - use less tape - a trial will be the way.
We use gaffa tape on an external shower compartment on our van. We seldom use the shower, other than to wash our feet, and dust really gets into it. We keep it sealed with a narrow width tape and it works perfectly

Personally I use vacuum bags and then put them into the storage boxes and seal with Duct tape. Get three times as much in each box and with a quick spray of Glen 20 in each before use I never have any pest or mould problems.

As Dennis says, cure the dust getting into the canopy.
I had the dust problem with my new Dmax and ARB canopy. The contents of the tray were full of RED dust.
Fitted one ARB Scupper vent and Problem solved. Just done a lot (like weeks) of dirt road driving in the last six months, and only cleaned the tray out a couple off weeks ago. No dust at all.
Think the Vent cost me $50:00 and took about an hour to fit by myself.

What ever type of bag you use I suggest putting the bags in the box and not the box into the bag as Frangipani suggested. Vacuum bags may not be readily available when wanted but other bags can be reduced in bulk when loaded by sucking the air out with your own mouth. Some use straws or plastic tube to get a good removal of air.

Jaahn
Pictured is one fitted to the rear Canopy Roof Edge. Facing forward of course. This is not my vehicle. Picture copied from ARB site.
I fitted mine to the front of the canopy and on the Passenger side.
The reason being I could reach/access (arms length) it from the side window of the canopy. With the Camper hitched I could not reach the vent to open and close it, if I had fitted it to the canopy, centre rear.
The roof moulding would not allow for "side" fitting on the rear of the canopy. So I had to fit to the front edge of the canopy roof. But it would work just as well on the rear I think.
As long as you create a positive air pressure in the canopy you will not get dust inside.
I was going to put two on, (one each side) but have no need now as this one works perfectly for me. In fact I very rarely close it as it does not seem to let any rain in that I have noticed.
Before I fitted this vent while on the road I had to buy a small tarp/dust sheet, to throw over the gear in the tray as the dust was thick on everything. This was even after fitting better seals to the tray.
The tarp/dust sheet, was rolled up and put away, and is now not carried at all.
I pressurise my Avan camper as well while on dirt roads, and do not have Red Dust inside after a day on a dusty road. I use a 100mm Bilge Blower Fan for this job.

Hi and thanks Juglamron, I thought of that but we do not have a vaccum cleaner to suck out the air.

Thanks Elliemike, We will go to ARB and get one fitted when back in Brisbane. regards. rocket n strop
If you want to open them and not use gaffer tape regularly you get rectangular foam strips 25mm X 8MM and glue to inside of lids. Easy to glue on with the shoe glue,, the yellow stuff,, contact adhesive.
