Norfolk Island Day 6

Norfolk Island Day 6

Well folks just a small recap, last night C2 and I attended a Convicts dinner which thus far has been the best value for money, we have spent on the Island, regarding entertainment and food. This morning we decided to do some domestic chores before heading out being the laundry. With that all taken care of we headed for Ball Bay to watch the unloading of gas from a ship to the shore holding tanks. Like all things Norfolk it is an amazing sight to watch. Once a secure anchorage is made two stern lines are then attached to the shore before the gas line is fed from the ship to shore to decant takes about 5-6 hours. From there we travelled up to Mt Pitt as there are some interesting walks to do there we met a couple from Queensland who told us of some other little out of the places to go and see. Lunch was then the order of the day and was taken we then headed off to Point Ross to look at the Crystal Pool and to look at all the pumice stone that is washing ashore. From there we visited the ****pit waterfall fresh water is observed running through the bush then along a stony outcrop and just disappears I stood there and observed this for some minutes before walking further along the track to observe the water coming out from the rock-face thus making a water fall quite spectacular. Tonight we head out for another adventure being Wonderland by night which is a walk through a rainforest at around 7:30pm so will see what that brings until tomorrow and our last day, stay safe everyone.

Must've brought back lots of memories to be a walloper again, Gaz. I thought the offloading of gas from a ship interesting. Is the gas piped to the houses and restaurants, etc, or do the residents fill their own tanks?

One of the Channel 7's is showing an old Leyland Bros tour of Norfolk Island recorded way back in 74 or thereabouts. I'll record it for you.

I worked with a young lady from Norfolk Is.  She owned a block of land that overlooked Ball Bay. She had a photo in her work area of the beautiful view from there. I always joked that I was going to set up a shack on the front of the block & retire in peace.  The closest that I got was to visit it on my trip there in 1997 or thereabouts.

She & her husband even had permission to harvest a particular Norfolk Island Pine tree to mill & construct their home.  That is or was a complicated & protracted process.

Her family had other land there & had a plan to construct a tourist passenger wharf there to take passengers off launches from cruise ships moored out to sea.  It seems that like many things on Norfolk, they couldn't get approval.  Lots of in fighting amongst the locals ... perhaps a tradition going back to the Pitcairners & later families.
