Snakes are out & about

Last night I was walking down driveway when I had a close encounter with a snake - dark coloured, about 4ft long & not fat.  Not sure who had the biggest fright.  I know I made the most noise.  So they are out & about.  Please take care

last Oct/Nov at Pardoo in the Pilbara I had to "despatch" a king brown from near the kitchen door then a week later a 5 footer tried to slither into the dining room but got its head caught under the weather strip at the bottom of the door (needless to say it too was 'despatched) - can't have snakes where there are children and animals. I am snake phobic so put one of those snake repellers near the dining room door (I was laughed at by the farm hands). But didn't have any more around the dining room. Was it because of the sonic repeller? I don't now but it made me feel better - lol.

Where I used to work we used those snake repellers and reduced our snake sitings by about 80% and they provide a great alternative to the traditional means of dealing with them (chopping them up with the long handled shovel) which is not only dangerous but illegal.

Hi guys

I have read the above posts and the brochure so kindly put out by Dorian (cheers mate).

There are a number schools of thought on this one, some say a waste of money others swear by them.

After reading D and D's comments Im still at sea (no brownies out there lol).

Do these suckers actually work? Are the cheap ones as good as the dear ones?

I was playing golf one day and a BIG brownie slid across the 9th fairway at the Barossa Valley GC, frightened the hell out of all of us, my mate found a new task for his 5 iron and dispatched the bugger.

We wander around this great country and often forget about our slithery mates and the damage they can do, especially out in the sticks.

Any good input would be appreciated.

Safe travels

Of course they work.

The only thing that is more effective is a framed photo of the M-I-L (a WMD that would repel all life forms as we know it).

I remember mum had a snake charmer by the back door of the farm 410 shotgun.

If you went for a walk through the grape vine you always too a long handled shovel with you

Correct.  Country women regarded the .410 and .22 as ordinary, mundane tools (and many still do).

They put plenty of game on the table too, for example rabbit and hares, meat for the dogs as well.

The men were always miles away, doing fencing and tending to stock, but often doing work for someone else to eke out the budget when times were tough.

The urban hysterical hoplophobes of modern times would have a pink fit.  biggrin

They've been out and about for months up here.   I don't like to kill them, [they have their place in the scheme of things,] but will if I have to.  I keep a "Snake" wire just outside the back door.

Is anybody else going to be watching [ I think it will be on "A Current Affair'] the guy who is going to be swallowed by an Anaconda  on December 7th ?

I feel sorry for the snake, with the gear he'll be wearing.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Sheba, you just sent a shiva down my spine and made me feel sick. What idiot would do that voluntarily.

I could think of someone I could replace him with though smile

Don't remember, but I think he's a Yank.  ['nuff said.]  I'll be watching.  I just hope the poor snake doesn't get hurt.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Yuk... gee people do some dumb stuff for a moment of fame.. Getting eaten by a very large snake is ultra dumb IMO.

I agree that snakes have their place in the big picture, but when it comes to close range, their place is at the end of my 5 iron. Sorry Sheba, Im very afraid of getting bitten.

I may take a look at these snake repelling thingos and give them a try.

Cheers all

Went to a blokes place in Cairns quite a few years ago and he showed me this really fat photo album.

Well here I am flicking through the pages of his garden, his dog, his garden and little piles of what looked like dog poo, then it clicked.

Every photo was of a mangled snake, his dog spots them and barks then he runs them over with his mower.

Dozens and dozens of them... eeeek.

Like I said Phil., I will kill them if I have to, eg. if they're in the house.  You can't take the time to do an identity check under those circumstances, unless it's definitely a Python.

I have one of the Solar repellers to take with me when Travelling, but haven't used it yet.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Might have to re-think those solar repellers - got some el-cheapo ones earlier this year but they died after a month or so, and the battery was soldered onto the circuit board so it was hardly "easy to replace" as per the brochure in Dorian's link. Should have known something was amiss - the instructions were written in Polish!

We have had 2 here already and it hasn't even got to snake weather yet!!Both got relocated ( to under the mulberry tree) , one outside our annex doorway and the other in the shadehouse, too close to people and pets for this little black duck.

my friend has 4 'sentinel's around his place and while having a drink in his shed a 5ft brown just wandered over to the freezer and went behind it scuffled around and then casually went out not 6 inches from the repeller....yep in the bin they went

Just FYI, the local Aldi store is now selling snake repellents for $13. I have no opinion on whether they work or not.

Had a small [about 5'] Python climbing down the screen door [outside] a couple of nights ago.  Beautiful thing.  Just angry I didn't think to get a Pic.

Cheers,

Sheba.

There are also electronic devices to repel mice, rats, lizards, mosquito's, cats, squirrels, racoons, possums and ticks.

I was in a Mitre 10 store on Saturday morning when a bloke fronted the counter with an electric possum repeller, asked for a refund, claimed the possums passed close to the operating device to set up residence in his roof, the chap behind the counter confirmed they are useless and cheerfully gave the customer a full refund.

Like Dorian, I have no idea whether or not they work, however I am highly sceptical.biggrin

Don't know about these repellents either.

Got a good one at home though. It goes bang.

Not set up to take it in the van yet though.
