My bit of fun for last Thursday, *rock through sump of the Astra (obviously not a road I should of taken) *16km's to nearest phone reception *4.5km walk on forest rds *someone came across & gave us lift to nearest village 40km's away * find out off tilt tray driver that where we are is full of wild dogs & he gets paid to shoot them, on average he gets 12-15 dogs a night 3 nights a week * finally arrange tilt tray through insurance & get home 10 hours after the initial little bump
Now it just keeps getting better.
*Insurance assessor looked at Astra yesterday
*looks like car is a write off, the insurance company isn't willing to take the risk that the motor wasn't damaged so will only fix if new motor is fitted.
*apparently that will cost over $7k so just easier to write of the car
Little bit ticked off as the Astra is a great little car with a really good diesel in it with just on 90,000 km's.

Why not buy the car from the insurance company for the written off value, then fit new sump. if you didn't drive for long after hole in sump there should be no damage to motor.
I agree they are a great little car I have a 2006 diesel auto when I have needed parts I order them from the UK for about 10% what Holden charge if you are interested I can give you the contacts in the UK for parts.
Cheers

I imagine the dogs are in good company as I would be pretty wild if I had to go through what you did Woolly , doesn't that happen at the most inconvenient time.
A friend bought their /written off car from the insurer and fixed it up, but couldn't get insurance thereafter. Would be worth checking if you are considering this.
My uncle had his Morris Minor low-light suffer sump damage when I was a kid, but that was at Bobbin Head picnic grounds hehe... hardly a place you'd expect that to happen. And a mate of mine back in the 60s managed to rip the sump off his Mini Cooper by hitting a "silent cop". Not too clever. Anyway, Woolly, at least you had a reasonable excuse... being out in the mulga with stacks of wild dogs. It's all part of the adventure, mate.
Sheesh ! How hard is it to check bearing caps while sump is off ?
Further insurance should be fine!
As engine is generally NOT insured unless damaged by accident..
Btw fit a sump guard .. Yea I know easy to say now !
Haha a sump guard would of been good, but really wasn't somewhere I would of expected to take the Astra, just sort of happened.
The oil light came on that's how we knew it happened, stopped the engine straight away.

You can get it re-registered in Qld if it is a "repairable write-off" - this generally happens in cases like what has happened to Wooley. The insurance company cashes in the remaining registration and cancels the rego. Before it can be re-registered it must be inspected for vehicle identity checks etc.
