Hi everyone trying to find some free camping areas near the coast is rare as hens teeth! Looking at early next year but wanted to find some definates before then. Anyone know of any on NWS coast - and I mean from Eden to Coolangata!-
Cheers DiDi

If you want to know all the good free sites, befriend some back-packers they know them all. As you travel you'll also find RVs parked in rest areas and other locations that are free and chatting with them will reveal other sites.
Thankyou for such good advice. I do have camps 7 but still not a lot of free camps near beaches. I just wondered if anyone had any favorite spots or sites.
Cheers Didi

As said, not many coastal free camps these days, but the best outback free camps aren't listed on either. You have to find them yourself by exploring dirt tracks near rivers or just tracks off the main roads. Google earth used to be good for finding them along some of the major outback roads where they had decent resolution when you zoom in, if you get a chance to before you leave on your trip. Pick a spot roughly where you need to stop for the night, then zoom in and just crawl along the road till you find a track that looks a likely spot. Good idea to find a few in each area in case they aren't suitable when you actually see them.
Our last trip we came to a herd of cattle being driven along the road near Walgett. Asked one of the young drovers if he knew of a spot off the road a bit that was OK for camping. Told us about a fantastic spot beside the river which we spent the night at. He forgot to tell us they were bedding the cattle down about 500M up from us though. Talk about a bloody racket LOL. There was also another mob (or possibly the rest of the same mob) about 1K down the other way as well.
Di, There is quite a lot of difference between Wiki Camps and Camps 7 and I believe WikiCamps if far superior. It's cheaper, it's regularly updated by users, it provides reviews, pictures, gives price information, provides a navigator function to guide you to the site as well as a compass and satellite finder (not very accurate but for the initial direction). And it's far more compact since it resides on you mobile phone (if you have a smart phone) and provides voiced instructions.
The main difference is probably the price and Wiki Camps is being updated constantly by its users, so it will continue to get better all the time, I think that Wiki Camps has made Camps 7 redundant,
there is no need to be connected to the internet to use it, you just need to download the maps and data before you leave home and carry out an update occasionally when on Wi Fi.
Try the "Camping Sites" webpage in Go See OZ website
Includes all the previous mentioned, plus Show grounds, National Parks, State Parks, Rest Areas, 4wd camps, Private Properties, Farmstay. even Driver Reviver.
Wow thanks for all the great info guys. will look at all the sites and get the wikicamps. But still say getting anywhere near a beach isnt as easy as the bush. Cheers Didi

We have two bibles.
The Camp book and Wikicamps.
Works for us.
I am sure that there are others but these give the best and are updated regularly.

Pretty much agree, what one doesn't tell you the other often does.
Being a bit of a prospector and having a nose for potential sites helps as well.
Two come to mind that we have used. Coopernook, about 20 k north of Taree and Elenbourgh ???? spell check, its about 40 k in from Port Macquarie on the oxley Highway. worth the k's
