Have any members been involved in recladding the side of a caravan that can give info on procedure, techniques, pitfalls, etc. Due to enormous cost to have it done commercially ($15,000) I am inclined to have a go at doing it myself. I cant see it is rocket science, but there are probably traps for the unwary and techniques used in the industry that are not known by the amateur. Any help and advice would be much appreciated.
Back in the 70's I helped my Dad re-skin the sides of an old Van - can't even remember the brand now.
He put marine ply sheets on and cut the holes with a router. Came up like brand new and lasted another 20 years before he sold it.
These days they are aluminium and bonded or clipped on so the same rules apply. Prise off and remove the skins to reveal the frame
beneath and let an expert advise on how best to attach... From doing it in ply I do remember it was a piece of cake we had no trouble
or complications at all.
If you have the tools and a big garage why not have a go yourself.
If You are reasonably handy & have the time, A good way to learn a bit and save a lot of folding stuff. Hako's suggestion is good I would also ask the question on other forums as well and plan the attack with as much information as You can gather.
I would suggest You make sure of supply before starting as some suppliers will only sell to "Trade" I got sideswiped a couple of years ago & the preferred repairer had a lot of trouble getting the ally sheeting.
