Who insures your caravan?

What cover do you have and who insures you?

Had a 'whoopsie' the other day. The second nuisance in 200kms. I was feeling clean, precious, annoyed and didn't want to change a wheel, especially when I saw the spare was full of red dirt from WA and realised the hub nut screw was jammed in.

So I called RACV for road side assist, to be told that I'm not covered on the caravan, it costs an extra $150 PA and I can't join over the phone on the spot. Also, if the car and van weigh over 4tonnes combined, they won't rescue me (that's if worst happened and I needed to have them both towed) .

anyway, thankfully I didn't damage the rim, amd the next town had the tyre I needed

It's not real easy to see, but that's the screw I can't get out, so I drove without the hub cover on. Any suggestions how to get it out?

G'day. To remove those hard to get off wheel nuts I would suggest that you add a 12 volt rattle gun to your travel kit. They don't cost all that much and have helped me in the past. Having a change of clothes in the kit also helps in you are wearing good clobber at the time. A towel and waterless cleanser also helps.

I am not sure if Ken Tame Insurance will insure caravans, but might be worth checking with them. They don't do roadside assist as such, but will organize towing if needed for motorhomes. We have Coaster and Terios insured with them. I think that to get roadside assistance, you will just have to pay the extra to RACV.

Insurance and roadside service is different, I believe. We have RAC Ultimate which I understand cover the tug and the van for roadside assist. Have not put it to the test. The van is insured with CIL.

We also have Racq Ultimate cover wouldn't be without it , I don't think any insurance would cover fixing a blown tyre

I have SGIO as I get the group discount for other items, house, contents etc.

But I have been with CIL in the past and had a couple of claims and found them excellent, prompt and very helpful.

For those situations we have NRMA premium cover. this covers the Nissan and the caravan for roadside assist.

We used it last year when the nissan got some contaminated fuel in the outback of QLD and would not now travel without it.

I think to get that screw out you might need to use some wd40 or similar from the other side and you will probably need a set of hex keys to fit the head of it. leave the wd40 to soak overnight.

We have full cover with CIL. They were the only ones we found that would cover a 35 year old 'van.
We have had RACQ ultra for years. ( Covered the trike & car ) Went to RACQ to get some maps for the current trip.
The lady there informed me that ultra didn't cover any failure of the 'van. Only the tug.
Upgraded to Ultimate on the spot.
Guess I should have read the Ultra brochure more carefully. All covered now.

We went through CIL, they cover the van crossing to Tasmania, they covered the van and car being towed or trucked to a repairer, they actually specialise in caravans. The premiums are very good too.

No but they may help 'a lady in distress' and change a tyre.

Yes, it wasn't  the expense of the new tyre ($115 in small town, done on the spot, I was happy with that) just I didn't want to change the critter, even tho I carry a specific jack that I bought for the purpose... its weird female logic! biggrin

Thanks all for insurance feedback. For now I've stuck with RACV and taken out a separate cover for full roadside assist. But I'm going to do some research as per your suggestions. Thanks again. And I'm thankful this happened, as, had it been worse, I had no cover, so it was a blessing in disguise.

Thanks Frank, I had some degreaser which cleaned the wheel a treat and now I've sprayed with WD40. I carry various Allen or Hex keys, whatever they are called. Tried gentle persuasion with a hammer but will leave overnight as you suggested.

Cheers,

MJ

Hi the point I was making about joining RACQ Uitimate They will get you out of trouble if you have a breakdown . But remember Insurance is only if you have an accindent they wont pay for someone to come out a fix a blown trye , But if the blown tyre cause damage to your tug or caravan then they will tow you .

The point I was trying to make is that roadside assist is one thing, insurance is another. The two are not related. The fact that Maryjane had a totally destroyed tyre confused the issue as to the problem being changing a flat tyre or looking at an insurance claim for the damage.

Still not quite clear but assuming the problem was with the actual changing of a flat tyre.

Looks like RACV total care which also covers your van, has a lot of limitations, one of which the van must not be over 21' from drawbar to spare wheel, which leaves out the majority of vans over about 17' internal
Also total weight over 4.5 t

 Thanks Ken,

read your post, just called RACV... YEP, im over their length and damned annoyed I wasn't told about it. The weight limit is 4 tonnes (I checked that)  and I was intending hitting a public weighbridge in 2 days time to be sure.  So I've cancelled that Total Care under the cooling off period For a full refund.

Guess I'll stay put here another day or so ( nice neighbours etc) and research as per all the suggestions.

Cheers,

MJ

 Mary,

its called an inhex screw..

you need an "allen key" to get it out.. you would have received one with the van when new (if you got it new)

most likely its around a 5mm inhex "allan Key"

Thanks Blue, no didn't get Allen key with van (second hand) but I carry them. Tried all the suggestions re WD40, the sucker ain't moving.  If I use force, I'll shear it off, so I'm leaving it be for now.

WD40 is ok but I find inox works better as it stays wetter for longer so is able to seep in better..

its also Australian made smile
