Hi all, First post on the forum! Has anyone solved the problem of dust entering through the tailgate on a Mazda BT50 (current model)? I plan to fit a air duct on the canopy to pressurize the back. Will that be enough? Cheers, Brownie2
Hi Brownie2 I put self adhesive rubber strips around the body for the tail gate to close on to, they come in different thickness's and you can get them from Clark rubber, and pressurize as well

No doubt it is a problem. Mate of mine tried what Dennis did and wasn't satisfied with the result. He's fitted a pressurising hatch at the rear of the canopy and we're waiting on his next trip to find the results but he reckons its already reduced the dust that you to get it during everyday travel. If it works I'll try the same thing because the gaps between my tailgate and the tub is huge.

I had two vents fitted , one on each side at the front of the canopy. I was told not to put them at the back, they are not 100% effective but do a good job.
They also help to keep the temperature down on a hot day for the fridge.

Thanks Dennis, D&D and Phillipn, That is really helpful and backs up what I was thinking. I'll get the vent/s fitted and let you know what I find when we hit the dust. It would have been a shame to see the nice new Blackwidow drawers covered in a layer of dust!!

I'm surprised they don't supply an anti-dust kit for the back tail gate canopy connection...I could see daylight at the tail gate area when the Canopy was fitted to my current model Mitsubishi Triton, so Mitsubishi fitted a specific metal and rubber Mitsubishi anti-dust kit which they riveted and silicone sealed in place....recently back from prospecting north of Kalgoorlie in that fine red dust area...none inside for the whole trip..havn't even had to clean it out and I had sleeping bags and blankets/pillows in there plus of course my beer fridge......Have you asked Mazda?..Good luck with whatever you try....Hoo Roo

Thanks everyone. I am on the case. Have been in touch with Mazda, will phone Thomsons Rubbers tomorrow (too late now), and have a price from a local 4X4 place in Wonthaggi to fit an air vent! Hopefully we will get it all covered. You are all Legends!! Ta.

Hi again, An Update....
BT Autorubbers in Bayswater, Victoria tells me they have sold "several hundred in the past 4 months" so I will probably fork out the $56 (incl. postage) to them and buy the sealing kit they supply. Also, I will have the air vent fitted to pressurize the back.
In the meantime, our Mazda dealers Service Manager has asked for "photographic proof" of the ingress of dust into the vehicle. Can anyone help out with a picture?? They have never heard of a problem.

Ute tubs are not sealed, as they need to allow for water to drain. Manufacturers don't build the canopies and the backs are not designed to be sealed. If your canopy has a sliding front window then you need to leave it ajar about 1/2 inch to create pressure and this will keep dust out. If you have the hinged opening window then you will need some other method.
Thanks everyone for your help. I'll keep working on it and maybe, maybe, get Mazda to admit that when a canopy is fitted they need to offer tailgate dust protection. (I am happy to pay)!
Glenn, I understand why an open ute has to be able to drain water, and I understand too that if a Mazda owner fits an aftermarket canopy that the problem is theirs, but my point is simply that if you have a factory canopy fitted, that the sealing solutions should be available. Not, as is the case, that Mazda say there is no problem.

No bull in under my canopy Hallmark. The vents I have create a positive pressure. If the spinning type vents are fitted, they create a negative pressure and will suck in more dust.
Hi Philipn,i have a Ranger with a canopy fitted and have sealed the tailgate area and NO more dust,dont need a pressure vent if the tailgate
seal is fitted correctly.

Their is a gap between the floor and the front wall of the tub. I find the vents are good, preventing dust ingress. As I said in another comment, they help to drop the temperature which helps the fridge on a hot day.

Yes, the canopy was fitted to the car before we took delivery, and the canopy is great. We just wish that they had available upgrades to the rear tailgate sealing, and an air vent that they could have fitted to pressurize the back. I can't understand why the service department at the dealership won't at least acknowledge a problem and offer the upgrades for those of us that are going off the bitumen! We would gladly pay.
All this said, the Mazda BT50 is a joy to drive and I would not hesitate to buy one, just be aware that if you don't want dust in the back you will need to pay about $110 (fitted) for the ARB vent, and another $56 odd to buy the dust sealing kit from Thomson Rubbers in Bayswater Victoria. Buy the BT50, it's a great vehicle! Cheers, Brownie
PS. Pejay, How do you like the Coromal? We have just bought an older off road Coromal from a mate. It's a Seka 505 XC that they have had for many years. We wanted a sturdy van to explore a few of the more difficult places that we weren't able to get to before, and I guess, not have to worry about a small ding or two!

The canopy is an EGR brand, if I were to buy another canopy I would look at another maker that I have seen. I can not remember the make but a big improvement on the EGR.
