Carnarvon volunteer position at the Space and Technology Museum. CAUTION

After spending a short time as caretakers and assisting with the initial set up for new Space and Technology Museum we would suggest caution if taking this on.

Clocked up in excess of 420 hours in just over three weeks for 2 of us.  Must unlock OTC (the dish gates ) at 8am and close and lock at 4pm , 7 days a week.

No days off. Must have computer and technology experience to run Museum. Many volunteers cannot operate the cash register, the cappuccino machine and cannot operate the door or technology for the Apollo experience Capsule- (most popular attraction )  Most volunteers have little or no understanding of the history the museum is trying to preserve. Responsible for extensive lawns and gardens. Including watering all daily

Duties also include vacuuming the  47 seat theatre and the café area carpet. Cleaning and restocking the ablution blocks, oh and keeping all the monitor and display glass clean. Also restocking merchandise for the souvenir part of the shop.  All printed materials. ie  signs , brochures and A4 signs in shop windows, even the Information  Bureau have disparate open-closing times. Variously 9 - 4, 10-4, 10-3, 10-2 makes for "unhappy  punters". Especially those on tight schedules. Must have own Telstra 3G wireless network or similar - No modem or LAN line to connect to. Any personal banking ,posting ,touring and shopping must be done after closing and cleaning. The Museum requires 2 to run it full time 7 days a week.

Deetric - your post answers some of our thoughts.
We visited there about 2 months ago - found the parking 'strange' - someone with a large van had driven in and could not reverse out - there were no signs. Had to park up the hill under the dish which was no problem really but more signs needed. We found the volunteers friendly although I must admit they did seem like travellers and not dedicated staff - helpful but did not seen to know much of the history etc. I guess Carnarvon does not have sufficient interested locals.
But we did enjoy it and left a donation....good value no doubt due to volunteers.
Good uck.
