Gday...

Thanks for the heads up Phil and it is good to see that the "authorities" are quite probably taking safety on the roads seriously and doing checks of all vehicles.

However, it seems this just may be another "my brother's cousin's next door neighbour's hairdresser heard from a customer that their aunty's friend ..."

One day there will be someone who is a member of the various forums who is actually, personally, pulled over for a check/weigh and provide first hand information.

Cheers - John

I just spoke  to a chap who said when he was coming down from the Sunshine coast earlier in the year the police were pulling vans over into a service area just before Brisbane and there were also some unhitched vans there as well so maybe it is happening

Check out       exploroz.com / forum.     That is where I got it from.

Their are a lot of vehicles/vans on the road that would be over weight. It`s not 'if' it will happen, but "when".

Gday...

With all due respect and I am really not being difficult - but his is just another 2nd hard account cry confuse

These  "claims" have been rife for the past six or so years on a variety of forums ... but this is again "someone who saw" it happening etc but was not personally pulled over.

One day someone who has actually been pulled over will tell us where, why and the outcome.

cheers - John

I totally agree 100% - it is patently obvious there are quite probably the majority of vans, and their tow vehicles, that are overweight wandering all over our wonderful Straya.

I can also agree that it is quite probably "if" rather than "when" .... but it still remains that there has not been a single member of any of the various forums on travelling/caravanning, over the past six or so years, that have personally been pulled over/checked for weight/safety. If they have, they have never posted the event for our information/education.

To be honest, I look forward to the day when the 'authorities' actually do begin regular and random such "blitzs" on vans and their tow vehicles for overloading/safety.

Cheers - John

Short memories??????? I have posted on here at least twice that I have been pulled over & weighed, two years back at Rollingstone, south of Cairns.

Also have seen a M/H in a check point earlier this yr near Taree.

A very close friend here in town came through the blitz at Cobar & couple of mths back where every vehicle was stopped, reguardless of size..

In May this yr there was a blitz on trucks & c/vans being weighed at Marybourgh, Qld.No I didn't pass through it as we turned off just before it into town but the two way radio was alive with it all for two hrs before we got there.

Another very close friend passed through one at the western end of the Nullabor two yrs back.

How many more reasons do you need to start believing that this is happening.

JC.

Sorry JC - I don't recall your post - guess I missed it. cry

Given the rarity of having ever met/heard from anyone who has actually been pulled over, I would be grateful if you would share with us what and how it all went.

Who were the 'authorities'  ... Police? Road Authority?

Was it only caravans being checked?

Were motorhomes or trucks being checked as well?

Did they have portable scales?

What were they checking for?

Did they also check the tug for compliance?

I think it would be of considerable interest to all on the forum to know exactly what to expect when (not if) we get pulled over.

Cheers - and thanks for making me jog my memory - John

Who were the 'authorities'  ... Police? Road Authority?  -----  Heavy Transport Police.

Was it only caravans being checked?------- No, they actually wanted the three trucks that we behind me, had to bring me in as well because the trucks were to close to let me go by, but they weighed me while I was there.

Were motorhomes or trucks being checked as well? --------- Only saw trucks & my self.

Did they have portable scales?-------- NO , a large fixed unit.

What were they checking for?--------- Weights.

Did they also check the tug for compliance?-------- No.

The Cobar blitz , they looked very hard at the mates coupling , chains & D-shackles as he had just fitted the new McHitch system, they had no comments.

I did do a post on the Cobar one just after it happened, & my own experience when that took place

Townsville two yrs back saw two blitz's with van left parked on the roadside, INFO via my mates family living there.

I done a post last week with info on this;

Local highway patrol do not do these blitz's, it is done by heavy transport division from major cities as the local guys do not have to training to judge the engineering of systems, as in chains, d- shackles & couplings.

INFO courtsy of a highway patrol officer that I spoke to in reguard of this.

Lets face it, there are so many units out there that are so far over it's beyond reason, just have a look at some of the setups with equipment on the rear as well as the A-Frame, they are bring it on them selves.

Recently had a guy admitted to being 1.3 tonn over, he was going to blame the caravan builder if he got caught as they told him he could tow the van with the L/cruiser. That would have been before he added two more water tanks, xtra batteries & solar, outboard motor & boat trailer, genny box , boat on the car ,etc etc.

Thats the kind of people that are bringing this on. Ignorance at its best but that wont save you on the day.

Actually every vehicle combination over 5 tonne coming into Katherine from the south is supposed to go over the weighbridge there. It would seem not many vans do so otherwise there'd have been some parked up when we went through mid year. On our way there every vehicle was being pulled up just east of Cloncurry by both transport inspectors & police. All trucks & a number of suspicious looking van combinations went over the scales while every vehicle heading west was subject to licence/rego & breathalyser checks. Was amazing, scalies checks were done in the transport bay whilst all others were done on the road.

I think your right with the 4.5 t , but I went through twice this yr without stopping & i'm still on the loose, no one has hunted me down as yet

heading nth today & there's a check point just south of Coffs Harbour, I see if there are any sighns on it. If its a GCM the the majority of rigs would have to check in.

It would be a busy place.

Only common sense to have weights checked anyway. At least you know then that insurance doesn't have an out if something does go pear shaped. In my opinion, the vast majority of rigs would not be covered.

Morning JC,

I think you will find that in NSW the heavy vehicle checking stations are signed as 8 tonne GVM.

you would need to be a fairly big MH or caravan tug to fit that criteria.

I'll never forget the stories my father in law told of being a east/west truckie and trying to dodge the hot bbq's and mermaids as he called them.

Ok,I checked the truck checking station on the south side of Coffs today a its for trucks over4.5tonn GVM.

This should clear any confusion. Also the 4.5T is the max on a car licence.

Gday...

I know the laden (ATM) (touring) weight of my van and also the laden GVM (touring) weight of the Landy. I also know the actual ball weight as well.

I put it outfit over the scales five years ago before I hit the road full-time - and have organised re-weighs twice since for my own "peace of mind".

Cheers - John

I would guess most would probably have no idea of what their outfit weighs . We don't have a caravan but have in the last few weeks bought a Tvan . We have been Rooftop Tent campers up until now , will still use the RTT at times .

I have access to a weigh bridge any time I want at no cost , so have run my Hilux 4x4 over it quite a few times , I have already weighed the Tvan empty , I will weigh it again when loaded for a trip . It is a 2006 model with a Track Trailer front half box . I only have 310kg to play with , fill the water tank and that will be 70kg .

I hate to admit it but I know the Hilux is more than 400kg over GVM when loaded for a big trip , my mates 4x4's are all over more than me .

But I look like a light weight compared to just about every other vehical I see . I have talked to many ppl when on the track , when I tell em what I weigh , they take a look at my vehical and say no way .

I went to the Show at Sandown last week a Mate was looking at Caravans . The carrying capacity of most was about 400kg give or take and that's with no water and empty gas cylinders most had huge storage compartments , I could see how you could just keep chucking junk in there .

I was thinking of getting a Pod for the back of the Lux before we bought the Tvan but the empty weight of those would put a lot of vehicals over GVM .

I looked at a new 76 series Toyota Wagon today it's only good for a extra 770kg as it sits on the yard ,
Buggered if I know might have to buy a Kenworth .

My daughter-law saw four vans on the side of the road near the sugar bowl caravan park in Childers on Thursday morning. No cars. So maybe it is true.

Hi biggrin

Both those statements are true by my observations. The truck checking stations in NSW are for trucks over 8 T usually. But I noticed that Coffs station the other week when I was driving down in my car and thought that it was strange. I was thinking if I was in my motorhome I should have to stop as it is 6T GVM !! Is this a change of tack for the RMS ?

Any other odd checking stations people have noted. confuse

I have checked the weight check points with our son who operates a truck here on the Gold Coast area a all the check points are for over 4.5t GVM. This would have to be uniform accross all states.
