All went well with no probs. Will be going to the Gold Coast again in a couple of weeks to visit the kids, most likely Bathurst weekend.
Hadn't even got home when they arranged this.LOL.
One thing I will comment on is the state of the Sydney/Newcastle freeway, more so the southern end is bad shape.
Much patch work of the concrete & many kls of cracks & very rought surface, will need a lot of work in the near future.
Also noticed that all the designated rest areas between Sydney & the Mid Nth Coast are now sighn posted as ; NO CAMPING,fines apply.
Now I ask what is defined as camping? It used to be to erect a shelter & to place a chair under the shelter.
These are designated rest areas, now where does it state at what hour of the day or night do you rest.?
If we pull up in a van/motor home for the night are we camping or resting? Would appear that we are camping.
If you pull up in a car/ station wagon/ & sleep is this not camping? it appears so.
I will be paying a visit to the local members office in the next few days to see what they are on about.
I only need one guess to answer the questions, If i'm right then its time these people minded their own business, how dare they dictate where we go & where we stop
when we are not on their premises.
If this is the future then its time to give the East Coast the flick & go west young man to the small towns that want us.
Just as an example we came through Griffith a few days back, quite a large town & there is a 48 hr rest stop right in town with water frontage , ( a large irrigation channel),green grass, dump point & toilets.

Glad you got home OK JC. I also agree with that stretch of highway. I was there not that long ago myself. I must admit, I am not a big fan of those concrete roads. Yes it is difficult to find a place to prop for the night without going to a CVP. When on a mission it would be nice to be able to pull up out the way and have a few hours kip then continue.

Hi guys, glad you had a good trip. The setup in Griffith is quite good, that came about after the Cmca rally there a lot of years. It was at that rally that I decided that I wanted a motorhome, the ex wife and I went through the rally on their open day.
In regards to the rest areas, in another site someone posted a response they got from the RTA or what ever it is these days. Basically they classify camping as when there is an awning out and table & chairs setup ect. If it is just a car & van or motorhome parked there and it doesn't look like you are settled in, all is well.

Hey JC - have you measured the garage to make sure the new van will fit? Enjoy the time at home, and glad you had a good trip.
We are in Kalgoorlie at the RV 24hour rest stop, at the Western end of town - the Ranger comes around every afternoon, takes numbers, and moves on camper trailers, panel vans, station wagons, or anything that is not an RV - which to him is self contained - you must catch your grey water in holding tank, but he will allow a bucket, plenty of places to empty it right next to the camp, and the trees love it.

We agree with everything that you have said about the no camping signs. Notice that they have a truck painted on the sign, know that we need the trucks to have their rest spot, but so do us travellers, the trucks drive and drive to fill the shelves, but it is the traveller that pays the money to empty the shelves, noticed in 5 NO CAMPING, one after the other, that there was not one truck parked there, this was arvo and night time, the towns that are catering for travellers are learning how much money we put into their community.
you made good comments about the "rest areas" I wonder about the apparent conflict between the signs and the police campaign to "Not drive tired" and don't drive when you would normally be sleeping messages etc.
I am of the impression that if you only stop overnight to "rest" and have not set up camp (legs down awning out etc) and you move on the next morning you will be OK. I think the signs are so anyone that does set up a camp can be legally moved on.
