We are in thew final days of 4 weeks of volunteering at the Flying High Bird Sanctuary in Apple Tree Creek just north of Childers in Queensland. It's been an interesting experience meeting other volunteers as well as the owners David and Ann. The deal is they provide you with power and water and toilet and shower facilities and in exchange you work in the aviary for 4 hours, 5 days a week.
We've learned heaps about mainly native birds as well as helping out David and Anne who aren't as sprightly as they once were and it would be a shame for this place to go under because they do provide a haven for injured and endangered birds.
As well as encouraging other to go there I was wondering if people had information about similar arrangements elsewhere?
We are currently volunteering on a cattle property hours n/w of Charters Towers. The area is drought declared, and the farmers pretty depressed. The little we do - checking the water each day, and in general helping around the house yard, gives the owner time to do more pressing jobs.
Our help, friendship and companionship in their time of need is important to their mental wellbeing.
We have site, power and water, some meals with the family, and whatever we want out of the deep freeze. They have also promised us a tank of diesel when we leave next week.

DUNMOWIN is no longer on the road and still DUNMOWIN!
Next time we are down in Sth Qld I think we would like to volunteer at Apple Tree Creek. We have done a lot of camp host volunteering with Nth Territory & WA National parks.
Can I ask... How do you find all the volunteering stuff?
MaryJane, for a start, check out the classifieds on the Grey Nomads website, both Help Wanted and Volunteering. In our current case, we stumbled across an old advertisement at a roadhouse and made the call. Other volunteers we met told us to just go to local shops, roadhouses etc in small communities, look out for notices on notice boards, or just ask.

At the local pub in a small town is great. Just be careful what you say. Suggest you ask for somewhere you can camp for a few days and you re prepared to help out in return instead of somewhere to work for free if they let you camp free. The second one will get you lots of offers but can result in slave labour.
I also spend a fair bit of time at the Maldon railway Victorian goldfields railway. Thiis is only for people who have an interest in railways and you can help around the yards or sheds and they are fairly relaxed in how long you work for. Not for someone just looking for a free camp but great for any train buff.Trains run twice a week.
I have several spots where I can go and spend time in return for a bit of work but they are just for me but I am sure anyone that is prepared to give a hand will soon find their own special places as has already been mentioned.
Volunteering is a very rewarding way to waste a few weeks and get great satisfaction that you have help someone out.
Regards Brian

Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue near Caloundra offer power, park-up and loo. They desperately need help with the day-to-day tasks involved in rescuing and rehabbing birds.

We did some time at Flying High bird sanctuary too. It was a wonderful experience. Ann and Dave are great and the other nomads who pass through to help are wonderful too. Recommended.
