How do you attach a bag awning to a Hiace?

Do I need to have roof racks to attach a bag awning to my Hiace? The awning is from Aldi. Advice appreciated.

Dependent on which model you have and how the awning is required to be attached...

I have mounted a couple of Fiamma roll out awnings on the high top Hiaces using a wooden backing block behind the fibreglass..

Thanks Bob,

It seems to be the same sort of fittings as the Oztrail bag awning. I think the fittings must be in the bag and needs roof racks. I've found a how to with the oztrails and roof racks. I was hoping I wouldn't need them.

If you put a pic of your Hiace up and pull the awning out of the package and put a couple of pix of the mounting side I will be able to see how it mounts and where you want to mount it..smile

Otherwise i will goto BCF and have a look at an Oztrail tomorra for you..

I honestly dont think you would need a roof rack..

Thanks so much Bob. That's very kind of you. I've found this link which appears to be same fitting as mine but I haven't found the brackets in the packet yet. I will have a good look tomorrow and take a photo of the van. It's just a normal Hiace 2005 model. No high roof or pop top just normal van roof.

Looks like you can mount it directly onto you Hiace by using longer bolts from the body of the awning into your roof and putting a couple of reinforcing plates inside your van or by getting a couple of brackets made to fit on the outside of your van just above the gutter and screwing it to that..

If you were anywhere near here (Grafton)I would be happy to put it on for you..

Thanks Bob,

I really appreciate your offer.  I'm near Sydney, a bit far away. I'm getting more of an idea what needs to be done though.

Again, thanks so much.

This is a mock up of the way I attach awnings to curved roofs of campervans..

Black line is the roof line..

Bent aluminum bracket (2 x by about 150mm wide with 3 screws ) to make the awning sit vertical..

Screwed and glued to the roof with Sikaflex.. (to seal the screw holes and also make it secure..

2nd bracket represents the awning that is then screwed to the vertical part of the roof bracket..

This does away with the need for roof racks that cause a lot of drag..
