Are CP's special?

I have often wondered why it is that CP's think they are special when it comes to bookings and payments.

If I book a motel for a week but only stay 3 days I am only charged for the 3 days not the whole week.
The motel does not ask for full payment in advance like CP's do

Fair trading (NSW) once told me the business is free to set the terms and conditions and we either accept them or go elsewhere.

I wonder how CP's would react if motels started taking caravans and campers in.

Our experience has been that motels and/or holiday accommodation places require either a deposit before arrival which you lose most if not all if you cancel and if you cut short your stay there you get no refunds unless you cancel well in advance - even then they will still charge a service fee. That's just the way they do business.

I think its more that CP's actually consider they are in a Monopoly business and can tell you what you will receive and what you will pay, rather than find out our wants/needs....
I've dealt with many CP owners <not the Manager non owners> and they really do invariably believe they are Special...the amount of their Investment should guarantee their returns on Investment even if their Parks are 'over capitalised' with items we neither require or use....its also why such pressure/influence is brought to bear on Local Area Councils to restrict or get rid of, alternative choices for the Grey Nomad demographic group....under the false premise that we are Freeloaders....

Quite the contrary we are at an age where we no longer wish to pay/subsidise things that we do not require, or ask for.....we will willingly pay our way however we will not be extorted or coerced...As a Group we are far less likely to be duped or accept the patently unacceptable as we perhaps had to, during the years we had work and family commitments and we could not 'rock the boat'.....but "they" don't understand or want to understand, our needs and wants...only their needs and wants....Customer may not always be right..but we are always the Customer...
Watch things change when we can get organised as a representative Group who has the power to change their ideas rather than we continue to accept theirs....
Fully self contained Rigs are only the first item in our armourment.....a few Independent Senators who understand our needs and potential voting power will likely be another...
A Eureka moment!.....a 'watershed moment with many dump points' to put it in our vernacular....it will come and sooner rather than later....
Hoo Roo.....

Golddetectornomad, I reckon your thinking is on the money. We will be a force to be reckoned with in the not too distant future and wobetide any politician who tries to dismiss us.

Ok Phil C that just might be a bloody great idea

now all we need is someone on here who knows how to do that.

I forget the figures just how many of us are there?

I remember some years ago when we started out trip up to Darwin from Victoria...

on the first day we only wanted to get to Panola SA to see how things were going and see how we were travelling etc...

as it turned out the Jerry rack on our trailer came loose..

so anyways, we decided to go book into the CP first..

they would NOT give us an unpowered site although they had the room... furious

not only that, they "forced" us to have an ensuite site with our tent..  evileye

I was fuming!! furious

but by the time we went back out to organise the repairs on the jerry holder the wind picked up and a storm was blowing in... so we didn't bother putting up the tent and spent the night inside the huge ensuite... it was great.. !! biggrin

I've done that Blue!..slept in the ensuite when prospecting/tenting and arrived too late and tired to pitch the tent and it started to gale......I slept with my head round the 'S' bend of the toilet...and my prospecting buddy slept in the shower alcove with feet half way up the wall....guess who could not even move next morning....and I was the shape of a toilet pan for two days....but we survived...and paid a monty for the site fee in Kalgoorlie W.A.........but.." I wouldn't be dead for quids".....
A lot of folk mistake me for a Clive Palmer 'mini me'........perhaps I can use it to my advantage and run for the Senate as 'Grey Nomad/Self Funded and Pensioner Party'.....I could easily be another Jacki Lambie.. ..with the added bonus of a brain.......Hoo Roo

The problem is there is no united Grey Nomad organisation to have a voice in the industry
There should be a GN rating system for parks and free camps
Would not be too hard to do and if the parks wanted a good rating they would have reasonable systems in place as part of their accreditation
Unfortunately i do not take too much notice of the motoring organisations rating system i think it is badly floored

There are some good parks but there are a lot more not so good parks.
I have even been abused by a park manager whilst a resident in a park when he found out that I bush camped.
Called me and my like the scum of the earth and that we should be banned from travelling until we accepted that caravan parks were for caravans and that is where we should go.
Did not think it was funny when I advised that as he had a caravan park and all caravans should be there then I should leave as I had a motor home.
I was actually in the town to organise to stay for voluntary work and he had the charity group organised that if you had your own accommodation you had to stay in the park but if you had none they would accommodate you in good facilities in the work area for free. They said they could not allow me to take my bus inside the compound even though there was enough room for a hundred buses of my size.
They were not happy when I said that I was sorry but I would not be able to stay as planned as I felt that I was being used by the Cp owner and the charity was more interested in the needs of their CP owner than having someone with specialised skill that had planned to spend up to a month working for free.
So it is up to us to decide what we are prepared to accept /pay for and then advise when it does not suit us and then move on. In my case I often advise a few business people in the town that I was prepared to or needed to make purchases in their town but had to move on as I needed somewhere to camp that fitted my needs. Any money I was going to spend would have to come with me.
Regards
Brian.

I think the idea of our own party is great and hell there sure is enough of us but lets take the call up and see how many are prepared to put their name and time to make it a success from my past experience with the fifty club every one likes to complain but does not seem to have the will or desire to get involved any takers ,just my thoughts

Peter you may have hit on the very thing that is holding us back.

We all have an opinion often based on a lifetime of experience and that experience may also tell us to not get too involved.

I agree with the comments that as a group we definitely have the numbers to make a difference and from that someone is going to sit up and take notice.

There must be at least a few people among us with the will to lead such a group. We need to find those people and anoint them. Current politicians would only be in it for the votes I expect and as usual be full of wind with no real action.

Otherwise we just put up with what we have now.

I am so disgusted with the two main political parties and their attitudes to us older and their level of honesty which we are learning about on a number of fronts that I did seriously consider having a go for the senate where an individual can have an impact but the advice that I received from home made it a non option.

The idea of targeting one area or electorate would be good but probably very difficult to achieve, it would certainly send a very clear message and even have a serious chance of winning and as KFT said it would need to be a real person not a politician as they all seem to only be in it for themselves and their mates.

Any grey nomad who is prepared to have a go and present our views will get a big vote from me.

I know we are not supposed to make political statement on the forum and I have tried to avoid talking about individuals and political parties but like meny others I have had enough of our current batch of politicians

as for Caravan Parks I have not stayed in one yet that has demanded full payment and usually don't pay deposits with odd exceptions, I vote with my feet and go else where

Hey Dave & Frank
Im with you. Yes we are not suppose to be "political" on here - but I think if a surveyed was completed on here - the majority would agree.
Where is the minister for GNs... they have one for every other section of our community..excluding anglosaxon males born of australian decent

Your right we have to get a physical person to represent the GNs point of view - in general.
But any new person will have to deal with the influence and backroom deals which all polli's do

So maybe not the ideal way in the long run BUT maybe we all lobby some attention seeking Poli based on the Sunshine coast -
who isnt worried about money and uses his might to further our views. In turn he gains more votes... he would love it
He has the political will - and the testicales to say what he thinks...to anyone... so maybe he at least can bring our issues to
the front at least... then maybe the others in his field - will at least listen and also want the same votes..
Hell - They got a motor party in WA in... why not something for us.

Just a thought...
KT

Hey Phil............why don't we start out own Grey Nomads politicial party????????

In WA we've had a Motoring Party **** elected and the local news showed his talents - eating kangaroo **** and doing donuts in cars. In his 1st TV interview he made all us WA people cringe - he couldn't string 2 words together and now is a puppet of Clive Palmers.

Any of us could run circles around him - and not just on Grey Nomad policies - but those that affect all people in AUST - some common sense and life experience makes a fairly good pollie

oh....and our motoring party Senator only got 0.03% of the votes - it was the stupid preferences and deals between the minor parties that got this total kangaroo **** eating idiot into a $230K and all the perks job and nod like an **** with whatever Clive tells him.

Most of us would not just represent GN, but the whole community - VOTE FOR ME AS NEXT SENATOR - but first let me read the pollies book on how to rip of the taxpayer with freebies, unauthorized payments, credit card fraud, back-handers..............now I'll get off my soap box before I fall and break my hip lol

We are in a caravan park tonight - which is purely about seven or eight bays, on asphalt, with concrete edging and grass surrounds. There is power and water, and a dump point. There are ladies and gents showers and toilets, and a laundry with washing machine and dryer, also a"clothes line out the back"!
A free bbq is provided with tables and seats, under a shade cloth shelter.

Best thing is - it is $25 - the washer and dryer are included - Monday to Friday, you either go to the council office, or ring the ranger (numbers provided on a board) - after hours (weekends etc.) ring the AH mobile number, and Julie will come out, turn your power on, get your details, take your money and explain the place to you.

The town is Broomhill - not far from Katanning on th4e Southern Highway, on the way to Albany, here in West Australia. Just a little town - but what a great idea - more small towns should be doing this.

seriously - having read the posts to this topic and others in a similar vein where so many of us have had enough of the way we are treated as seniors (plus the young nomads - and they are growing by the year), surely one of us is prepared to live in luxury in Canberra and look after our interests? I'd be happy to be part of/set up our own GN party (even give them **** in the Senate about GN and our pensions etc)

What about the major chains charging credit card fees but the smaller ones don't and give (generally) friendlier service. They've lost me as I will refuse to pay in future and go somewhere else.

Hey Gns
You know its funny. Everywhere you go and chat to people .. sit by a camp fire or just ideal conversation
everyone feels the same way.
Sick and tired of the same old retric from both sides..They just want someone to at least represent GNs
nation wide.. as well as many non Gns who feel exactly the same way.
So suggestions? ... where do we start... ...???

The key is to arrange alternatives that do not involve vested interest Caravan Parks and Councils with their decreasing Freedom parking areas......one begets the other.....
We need to encourage alternative private sites......private individuals with land adjoining Towns and Citys'...to fence off securely with all weather stone/pebble access roads......

We know our needs primarily are security and perhaps access to tap water........Landholders of course will have to challenge existing Development Plans and Zonings as they will be resisted by vested interests against an alternative happening for the 'Grey Nomad' demographic group....
Its ironic as Caravan Parks have for years now been doing exactly the same challenging existing Development Plans with establishing pseudo mini housing estates by STEALTH with cabins, mini homes, having started originally with a Caravan Park for travelling public.so designated by Council Development Plans.....and now many privately owned dwellings erected paying permanent rental site fees....contrary in many instances to the original Development Plans..until in many cases there are very few 'travelling sites' remaining having been exhumed by mini houses of permanent structure..and not transportable....

Conversely Landowners could challenge these same Development Plans....
What is needed to start the trend, and when first successful it would extend to many other areas once precedent is established....a Cartel of Professionals to include a Chartered Accountancy, Planning Advisors and a Legal Firm to advise the Landowners and also make the professional representations to Councils on the Landowners behalf....
In a former life I have seen Professionally prepared submissions change existing Development Plans mainly because of need rather than greed.....they have to be tenacious in their submissions/follow up because vested interests will always seek to protect their own financial/monopolistic positions.....
Our future needs are clearly established as an ever growing Demographic Group, and our needs are not being met by existing Caravan Park ownership mentalities, who are torn between family type holiday accommodation with all the bells and whistles and maximising profitability, and semi or permanent living accommodation with no place for the 'itinerant travellers' ad hoc by nature and length of stays.....us.........
It can happen and must happen....we need to find the entrepreneurial group/cartel of Professionals who can recognize the business opportunity we present and of course the Landowners many of whom may be farmers will improve the values of their land set aside for these Freedom Camping sites ..a win/win situation for all except those vested interests who wish to maintain their perceived existing monopolys'...A Senator or two would also be quick to see the voting bloc we represent and help with submissions to 'non receptive' Local Governments..
Food for thought?....Our RV's are now being constructed to take advantage of such Freedom Camping/Parking Sites now we need the Land to accommodate and it obviously will not be existing Caravan Parks....watch them change their attitudes 'en masse' when this starts to become reality....
As a Former Bank Manager dealing with Caravan Parks, and later Certified/Qualified Business Sale/Purchase Broker selling a number of Caravan Parks, and Licenced Real Estate Agent/ Sub Division Development Consultant approaching Councils with similar Professional Group backing, with my own business, I have an insight into both sides of the vested interest/financial 'fence'....it will happen sooner rather than later...but rather than change their business strategy's while they maintain the power/influence....they will not give ground/concessions easily....
Multiple business's in Townships would be the principal beneficiaries in addition to the Grey Nomad demographic group....

I trust those ""Special"" CP's that read these threads take notice as it will be to their financial detriment rather than ours not to take heed...."".the times they are indeed a' changin'""
Hoo Roo

P.S. I have watched a former Caravan Park in XXXXX S.A. that was purchased as a "traditional" Caravan Park providing maximum sites for travelling Vans...that Park today now has over 100 permanent/semi permanent dwellings, built by Osmosis, and now NOT ONE site for travelling Vans.....this trend is continueing all over Australia and another coastline Park on XXXXXX Peninsula S.A. which is closing altogether  for a Housing Estate...what is going to replace these lost sites as their usage need grows.. not shrinks??....

I removed the Towns names to protect this Forum from Legal problems...

G'day Golddetectornomad

very well said thank you.

I too am in favour of primitive camping sites on rural farms that offer just what our generation are looking for in accommodation and it is not what a lot of CP's are offering.

I am also thinking that the cost of liability insurance may be a hurdle for many to get started.

Someone will have an answer I hope.

I do like your thinking

There are some great comments and views represented in this thread, and people are correct, there are enough of us to have some political influence. But there are some things to consider:

While there have been a number of single topic politicians of recent (Motoring party to the Greens), this really does not add very much to the value of the parliament to the country.

While we all think the life of a politician is an easy one, I seriously doubt that it is. The hours they spend either in parliament, committees, travel, meeting with their constituents, meeting the press, understanding what they are voting on, etc.

While many of us are prepared to volunteer an opinion on many topics, and in some cases many opinions on topics that we feel strongly about, I doubt if any of us would be prepared to commit to the hours, effort, and derision that would be involved in being a senator for six years.

Perhaps a better question would be "how can we reap value from our numbers, by making existing or prospective politicians aware of our numbers, and our needs?"

Maybe we need to develop a letter we can send to politicians (and maybe the media), which should contain a clear list of what is important to us, and what we would like to see done.

Perhaps we also need some members who speak well, and can think on their feet to be talking heads, people who can represent our needs on current affairs programs.

OK, thats my two bobs worth to progress the discussion.

I would love to hear other people's thoughts.

Hey GNs
I agree with Pleando and Golddectornomads comments. In fact with all of above (well maybe not all of billieeees lol) All Spot on.

But I think Plendos Idea of a letter to many politicans - should be just one. IMPACT....
If many have it  - then it looses its impact and its "just another"

Plendo is right rather than one of us be "the figure head" so to speak - or senator and take on all that "that entales" which is a big challenge of the beaurocracy -
Put together a professional well worded list over a selected time from all the members to form a selective say TOP 6 out of 10 with one message

Still select some experienced GNs to speak on behalf of all the GNs when needed - to Current affairs etc
persons whom are well spoken, quick on their feet - speakers who will gain public support.

But use an existing politican or senator thats already In as our mouth piece.
Isnt that why they get paid these big bucks...Let them earn it.
We just need to agree on and then select/ lobby a selected person .. .
Then that person will certainly want votes... thats what keeps them safe..
We want their existing influence and contacts to further our needs -

If the list is put together "professionally - well worded" and we can prove the numbers -
As has been stated above - we are all sick of the retric from both sides...
its time they earned the money we pay them....or we get someone who will.
We arent tied to either party...so whomever will further the need.

But we must ensure that we act as one group - united... Thats our "Key" if we loose that - we've lost
Ensure ONE MESSAGE gets out - that is simple and is constant.
Everyone saying the same thing.. so keep it simple.

The more GNs and Non GNs that we can gain support from -
the more chances we have of a successful lobby and getting our needs.

Time is on our side... not theirs....we just have to do it right first time...
Anyway great topic.
Cheers
KT
