Jayco = value if not top of range build...and I've had a couple of Jayco's and still use one....however not 5th Wheelers.
Not quite your question I guess but I get the Heeby Jeebies when I see Vans larger than my 19' Heritage....it is so much harder to find places to park in Country Towns/City's when travelling..not to mention the entertainment value when parking in a tight Caravan Park site.....I have enough fun trying to find a spot to park for my Triton and Van in Towns' back streets without considering 28' plus a vehicle....I even find entering/leaving some of these City/Large Country Town's Service Stations, a challenge to get round their pumps etc and avoid all the other cars even with my rig....and I see others with greater fun and games and a few husband/wife tiffs in guidance......however sounds like a great set up once you're 'there' and likely to stay a while....Good luck and welcome....Hoo Roo

GDN, I am looking at 5th wheelers for exactly the reasons you mention above.
Your 19' van also has about 5' of draw bar making you say 24' plus vehicle length.
A 28' 5th wheeler has about 4' over the tray of the ute, making it 24' plus the vehicle length long. Also, because of the location of the pivot point, the 5ver is easier to position when reversing.
So a 28' 5th wheeler is easier to park than a 19' van. It can also travel across Bass Straight for the same cost as your van, and has all the extra room.

Just some of the reasons that 5th wheelers are growing in market share at the expense of traditional vans.

Regards

Peter

My brother had a huge 5-er with slide-outs, and he found easy to tow... basically because he'd been a truckie. But they had a lot of trouble with sites not being big enough, level, or accessible, both in caravan parks and free camps. Some caravan parks charge extra too.
Their problems with getting their imported rig repaired under warranty wont be an issue with yours though, Jayco are pretty good like that. We have a smaller Jayco, and have needed plenty of minor repairs, all done with a friendly attitude.

We have been towing a 25ft caravan for the last few years so the overall length will not worry us.

Hi kmc,
I have a mate with a 29ft 5th wheeler, he's been living in it for over a year. It's not a Jayco (lighter than Jayco with a tare of 2570) and tows with a BT50.
There's not much he doesn't know about them, and he has friends with 5ths too. He mentioned that Jayco had had problems with the turntable.
Anyway, he's happy to chat to you. He doesn't do forums, so if you want his number, let me know and I'll PM you with it.
Cheers,
MJ

Hi there. We have an Iveco 50c18 with a winnebago body on the back. We haven't to date had any problems with the drive train. It uses 14ltrs per 100ltrs normal, and 17ltrs towing. We tow a duel wheel car trailer with a Suzuki jimny on with an extra 100ltrs of fuel.
In all we are very happy with the Iveco.
Cheers and enjoy.
Lozza.

Having a 5th wheeler myself we take an interest in others we meet on the road with similar.

I have met two new Jayco 5'er owners recently and both were in the throws of having some major issues, one was the slide out surround which had come away from the main body and was found to have been fixed with tiny self tapper tech screws !
The other chap also had a long list of other minor items, including leaks again from the slideout area.

Not jayco bashing in any way just telling what I was told. I still feel jayco have their limitations but do have an enviable warranty network.

We have just bought a 24 ft trailblazer 5th wheeler towing it with a patrol so haven't done many Kms yet but I don't find it large as some have stated for the reasons that PJK outlined we were more concerned with the height ( some fuel servo's have low clearance roofs ) of some 5th wheelers than the length had a look at the jayco 's at the Melbourne c& camping show for us it was just too high /big for what we wanted but that's just us not you, as for the Iveco ( Interstate Vehicle Every C... Overtakes ) found the specks on them to be mind blowing Loved them but again decided it was just too big for us, now I have driven semi trailers on and off since I was 19 so I guess that I am used to long trailers also , just got my b- double licence last year too, mostly to prove to the kids and myself that I could as I have no real desire to drive one.

so if you think you are up to the challenge of driving this rig and it ticks all your boxes than go for it .

Hi Glenelg, glad to see you have a little Evergreen. I have only seen pictures, own an Ultima myself, am very pleased with mine.

Seeing as a few 5th wheeler owners or potential owners are replying to this thread, anyone interested in joining a small group of 5th wheelers as part of free  & low cost campers forum

http://www.freecampsaustralia.com/phpBB3/index.php

There is a small 5th wheeler post that would be good if we had a few more contribute to
