Buying medical devices if privately insured.

I had to purchase a new blood pressure monitor as my old one was about 15 years old and the readings were getting way out of the ball park.

Got mine checked at a chemist, I did a reading with mine and then straight away did a test with theirs. The readings were a long way apart.

The chemist advised that the expected life of these units is about 4 years and they should be checked at least once a year by doing what I did at least.

When I went to my health fund BUPA to inquire I was advised I needed a document from my doctor to say that I need one. Dont worry about the drugs I have been taking for years LOL.

This requirement has come into effect from 1st July this year.

Well the doctor would not accept so I had to go and get further information to check and then went back and told girls in the office that it was compulsory and all I needed was a letter to say my medical condition needs home checking of my blood pressure and she was confirming this.

This is just a warning for people on the road as when you are stationary at home it is not a great issue to pop into the doctor and get this but if you are away from your doctor for any length of time it may be handy to carry this letter in case your unit fails for any reason.

Also get your unit checked regularly and when going past a chemist periodically get the to check your unit is giving a reading similar to what your is giving.

Regards

brian
