Vehicle and Caravan Insurance

Well folks, it's a while since my last post but we're just about ready to Rock n Roll. The house is under contract and we have our eye on a 25 ft Caravan and a Ford Ranger xlt so should be on the shake down cruise in about 6 weeks.

The thing now is to look at vehicle and caravan insurance. Can any of you tell me of your experience and who you are with. There seems to be a problem that we wont have a fixed address to house these items. Mind you I haven't tried many Insurance companies but my wife said 'Why don't you try the grey nomads see what they do?" Very good idea I thought, so here I am asking real people who have had some experience in these matters for there thoughts.

Happy travelling folks!

Graeme and Angie

I just changed from Apia to CIL. Apia has a lower premium but an inflexible excess amount of $500.00 on a MH.  For example if I break a windscreen, the cost is just under $700.00. I pay $500.00, Apia pays $200.00. Is that a good deal.!!!!  CIL are a little higher with their premium but give you one free windscreen a year. Their excess is $200.00, so if you break a second windscreen within 12 months, excess is $200.00.

If you are a member of CMCA, Ken Tame & Associates have a good deal for members.

This subject has been discussed many times. Go into "Search" area and type in Insurance and all the previous posts should come up.

I have our car and caravan with GIO could save small amount by splitting car and van insurance but prefer to only having to deal with one company as an accident will probably involve both car and van, have had accidents with the car and found GIO easy to deal with.

Got a quote from Ken Tame but to insure with them would have had to get valuations on car and van and just couldn't be bothered with the hassle and the van would have been covered for far less than I have it insured with GIO.

Cheers

David

Thanks guys, that gives me a starting point.
Ken, I will do the search as you suggest.
David, That's a good point to have both vehicles insured with the same company. Could save a lot of hassles.

Cheers for now,
Graeme (Gemangi)

I have been with CIL and found them fantastic albeit a bit dearer than some.   I had two claims and both were dealt with promptly with no fuss.

Now with SGIO but only because our home etc is with them and get discounts if more than one item/vehicle/van etc is insured with them.

We had a problem when we were with CIL & they were very prompt to deal with it. Good service all round.

I am with Ken Tame and have had a few claims, very prompt and no problems. 200 excess and not to expensive. You have to join CMCA

We have the car with RACV and the van with CIL.     Had a claim on the van last year, CIL dealt with it quickly and easily and when the insurance was due a couple of months later there was no increase in premium.

One major reason we went with CIL was the extra coverage they gave in getting you and the van home and covering accomodation costs if something happened to the van a long way from home.   Didn't have to use that part, but its good to know its there.   So whatever insurer you go with make sure you are getting comparable coverage.

Thank you all for your quick responses.

I will get quotes from the recommended companies. Now that I have a starting point.
Hopefully we will be on the road soon.

I have just recently checked a few different insurance companies but ended up staying with my existing one. It is through my Health Funds General Insurance area and they use GIO. I now have agreed value on the Colorado and will deal with them with the new Den when the time arrives in the near future. Works well for me anyway.

We've had SGIO for many years for home/contents and 2 vehicles, but when we tried to insure our van with them, found out coverage was very poor - they wont cover any electronics in your van and you cant claim it under your house/contents so if you have laptops/andriods/TV's - youre not covered. Their caravan cover is very poor.

Ended up insuring with CIL and despite the "loyal membership and multi-policy cover with SGIO" bull****, they were slightly cheaper for the same cover. They will give you as much cover as you want on van contents and it covers all the electronics except for mobile phones (not android palms etc). As far as I am aware, no insurance co will cover mob phones anymore as people "loose" them so they can get upgrades to the next new beaut yapping device

Thank you Bruce and Bev.
I've looked at a few Insurance companies now and have pretty much decided on CIL for our caravan Insurance.
Thanks to all that have responded to my post. We are in SA and we pick up our caravan in a week or two and are looking at camping in the Windsor Gardens caravan park unti Xmas.

Kind regards
Graeme & Angie

Just for inormation, CIL is owned by Vero who is owned by Suncorp.
Suncorp also owns AAMI, Apia, Just Car Insurance, Shannons, InsureMyRide, Terri Scheer, Bingle, Asteron and Tyndall insurance brands in Australia.

Looks like insurance is almost a closed shop.

Good Luck.
