Dougwe UPDATE # 9 (Final)he has a photo which he refers to as the Greens Lake Thong Tree.
One would have to wonder why this topic is continually surfacing.
I would suggest that this message will offend all the tree-loving members who disagree strongly with the idea of killing a beautiful tree in a reserve by nailing shoes to it. We have been through this topic many times and it always ends in tears with the usual rude insulting pictures etc. and the thread being closed by Cindy.
In case I have not made my view on the so called thong tree clear, I think the local shire ranger should come out and take all the shoes and nails off the tree and hopefully it will live to a ripe old age.
It is against the law to mutilate a tree such as this,
I would suggest that a post or could be put in to satisfy people who want to have a structure to nail shoes to.

Nailing thongs to a tree doesn't do much for me either, but, on the other hand, trees are used for firewood, building houses, furniture, the manufacture of paper (including the stuff we wipe our bums with), packaging and a myriad of other things. Thousands of hectares of trees are destroyed every year by wild fire. So it's not like one tree adorned by thongs is gonna made the front page of the SMH.

I'm with you Gary, it's strange behavior but really no big deal.
I'm a lot more concerned with the chainsaw brigade, sneaking around cutting limbs off living trees, it seems to be a growing trend.
I can understand your feelings about "defacing" nature .... but perhaps I could also draw your attention to YOUR "signature block" -

Garry it is only one tree but it is in a reserve where trees are protected.
The important point for me is that this tree provides shade and beauty for the campers of Greens Lake. I do not believe that any persons have the right to damage it.
I will always stand up for the protection of such trees .
I feel strongly that the tree should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent any further damage and hopefully make a full recovery.
This kind of environmental damage could be the catalyst for stricter rules for camping areas such as Greens Lake so it does no favours for the free camping movement either

There are heaps of topics that I have no interest in so I just let them go to the keeper and read what interests me.
I started this topic because it was mentioned in another post and I feel strongly about the tree. If this is of no interest to you then leave it for others who have not even had a chance to read it and they may want to comment ( for or against ) .
The topic is worthy of discussion by interested members

Hi Glennt
If it is fun to vandalise trees then YES the fun police are here and ready for action.
As for ?Goodbye Australia Hello Russia ? it would be interesting to see what would happen to one in Russia if you nailed shoes to a tree in a public reserve that is used by thousands of campers.

I would not normally get into this, but I feel compelled to say something. I saw the thong tree back when I first joined this forum, and I must say I thought this was a wonderful way people who came together left a little reminder of them selves behind. How soon we forget the good times.
If the the tree could speak it would be proud to be a part of the gathering of our great travelling Grey Nomads, sure we probily should hang the thongs, but I can tell you, I can't wait to get to the lake and hang my thong among those that have been there before me.
Ah that's my Sunday afternoon statement.
Cheers
Greg

If you feel so strongly about the tree, you could always go to Greens Lake in the dead of night and remove all the nails and offending thongs. My bet is they would all be back there again pretty soon.
Howdyeeee folks, not this again,,??? Please...... a very excited Billeeeeeee PS,, Doug you are a naughty boy for starting this rubbish up again,,heheheh

Geez, there's trees all over the country that have stuff nailed onto them, hung in them, tied in them. We've seen lots of Termite mounds dressed in T shirts and hats along the roadside... doesn't seem to worry the termites, we noticed some termite nests had grown over the top of their clothes. Its a bit of fun on a long drive.
I'd like those who put empty glass bottles onto a tree to take them to the nearest garbage bin, glass is a real hazard, but otherwise its just litter.
You could clean/remove the litter if you want, a lot of us tidy up rubbish around campsites.
