Weird TV happening

There we were, watching the ABC news, when suddenly the picture went to "No signal". "Grrr", said Mr D, "it does this every evening".furious

I said "I didn't touch it, all I did was turn on the light over the sink"confuse So I turned it off again, and Lo and Behold, the ABC came back!!!eyepopping.gif

How can a little LED light affect the TV signal from one channel only??? All the other channels are unaffected, and the ABC is not always affected, depending on where we are at the time.

I reckon we have a Gremlin.evileye

Hi Gerty, I have a similar problem but with my radio. Don't bother with the TV much these days.
If I plug anything into the 12 volt plugs for charging, the radio squeals and carries on like it's tail is caught in a mousetrap. It sometimes happens when I turn the over the bed LED light on as well.
Although tonight I've got phone charger plugged in as well as laptop charger and all is good, you know why?? because AFL is on and I don't want to listen to it, lol
I'm wondering if it only happens when parked in certain places. Was going to get it checked by auto electrician but trying everything here tonight, all is goo, including turning on the over the bed LED light.

Your problem is an overload on the wiring circuit. The VAST decoder, being the most sensitive item, will shut down.

I had the same problem, so I wired a dedicated circuit for the decoder and have had no problems since.

Most electrical devices will drop out on low voltage, when you have a number of heavish current draws you get a voltage drop across the cable because of the cable resistance and the cable is under rated for what is on the circuit . As the Phantom said you may have to wire in a new circuit with heavier cable (2.5 mm sq for power) . But check the circuit with a multi meter as there might be a faulty connection some where . Check the supply voltage at the source to the van and then at the appliance under load and see what difference there is.

I too had a problem with the TV dropping out . It was also due to power drop when the 12v plug (normal cigarette type) connector got warm and simply breaking the connection  ..

Only recently was I made aware of the "merit" type of connector which also locks in the connection to make a more secure contact .. I had always thought that they were all the same ..

Having now brushed aside some of that grey matter, The problem was quite easily solved ..

.. thought I'd mention that for any others that may not be familiar with these "merit" 12v plugs !

I neglected to mention that both Male and female MERIT connectors need to be used .. not just the male plug !

The Merit connectors are excellent.

You can get a plug that can be used to connect to both Merit sockets and cigarette lighter sockets you just need to remove a small plastic collar when using a merit socket it then enables you to use merit sockets without replacing all the cigarette sockets in other locations.

Cheers

David

GD, there was a news flash last night saying the ABC will not in future work if you have LED lighting and it suggested you get all of your lighting changed, they did say at the current time were undertaking test to see what happens when they switch to not liking LED lights so that is why you are getting the tv go off every so often. ok what a load of rubbish Dougwe told me all this and I thought I should pass it on.

I have this same problem at home. The ABC say check all leads, antenna etc. but it doesn't fix the problem. I don't have any problems with all other channels.
I reckon they turn down the output of the transmitter. I can't see any other reason for it.
Sometime it pixelates first but most times it is a dead cut. Very frustrating so we use Iview a lot. Most times it is during the news and 7:30 report QI and insiders on Sunday mornings.

Is that LED light on a 12VDC circuit or on a 240VAC circuit?

Cheers.

The problem is some LED lights use a switchmode powersuply, & if its not designed properly radiates interference. This interference seems to upset the frequency ABC use.

Further to my previous message; I have LED lights completely in the caravan and have never had a problem with ABC tv reception or other channels. Maybe I should watch tv in the van at home!!!

Hmmm, maybe it is for you biggrinbiggrin

NO ITS NOT, when you are out in the playground and see a dish outside a van ask for info once you are shown a couple of times you will find it easy, now if you are only going bush for a short while then maybe stick with your current setup and if you can't get a signal the watch the radio, or read a book, BUT as you are looking at getting another van it maybe worth looking at the tv's with vast incorporated into them, but you will still need a dish and learn how to set it up (very easy even for you) if you go this way then I suggest you get the dish on a tripod not the one that sit on the ground in a frame, sold by iTech, oh by the way do not buy anything from iTech IMHO

Sorry Gerty my good friend and mate wombat is trying to get me to go "off topic" yet again but because he has been so nice to offer advice I must reply.

Thanks for the info my good friend but I already have a dish and only use it for eating food out of, sometimes there is a vast amount of food in it too. I now have a second use for it. I only have things on board that serve more than one purpose. Never thought of using my plastic dish for TV, wow, you learn something every day.
