Don't be put off by negative press etc for Halls Creek.
Visit the Tourist Info Centre there for good info on the town to get info etc. Toilets at info centre, also at Roadhouse.
The Road House did have showers for a few dollars as well, not sure if they still do, if you are only passing through, but the CP is best.
As there are some "after hours local activity" I would stay at the CP in town for at least one or two nights, it is quite safe there but lock up and don't leave the CP at night.
Take a drive out to old Halls Creek and see the ruins there, the creek runs alongside the old town and is a nice picnic spot.
Also visit Caroline's pool and China wall on the way out to Old Halls Creek, make sure you take your camera.
Also get info on the Russian Jack statue outside the TO.
There used to be a store at old Halls Creek dont' know if it is still there, also a basic caravan park, but I think the one in town would be best. Unhook your van at the CP and drive out in your vehicle.
Please do not by-pass Halls Creek and you will probably only get the chance to visit it once and it is a long way between towns.

There is a caravan park between Kununurra and Halls Creek - by the turnoff to the Bungles. It is relatively new. I believe they run day trips into the Bungles, and also can do some sort of flight in from there. Might be worth a stop there and maybe a Bungles visit? If you have never been in there, they really are special - see the 2007 Trip section in my blog.

There is also another caravan park at the Wurmum (Turkey Creek) Roadhouse on the main highway. Never stayed there so don't know what it is like, Roadhouse is good there though, the staff were young Irish Backpackers when I was there last.
We are travelling that way next week and have chosen our stops on WikiCamps. We only travel about 100 k a day. Nowhere to go and lots of time to get there.
Dunham River
Turkey Creek R/h
Spring Creek
Halls Creek C/P
Marys Pool (they say not to be missed)
Ngumpan Cliff
Fitzroy Crossing C/p
Ellendale
Derby C/p
Should take about 2 weeks staying at a mixture of Parks and free camps
Don't be put off by Vic's negative thoughts, everybody has an opinion and some will not agree, IMHO I would NEVER stop in a CP in HC, just remember this is IMHO.
Everything else Vic says is correct, go and enjoy.

Have you stayed at the CP at Hall's Creek? We have stayed there a number of times and felt quite safe and secure there

NO and I never would, I have seen enough of what goes on during the day and that is enough for me, christ knows what happens at night and I do not wish to see what goes on at night.
BUT I do respect your opinion, because you are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine.

I respect your opinion too Wombat but would respect it even more if you had actually stayed in the CP. I have never had a problem in town during the day there and felt quite safe, despite some of the locals lolling about "sleeping it off" but stayed in the CP at night.

That is exactly my point, and that is why I said IMHO, one does tend to get a feel of a place without actually staying there IMHO
I think there have been big changes for the better, in recent years, since the alcohol restrictions were tightened up in Halls Creek.
I have only stayed there (several) before the restrictions Wendy, yes there were problems at night outside the CP but as long a people lock up and stay in the CP at night they are quite safe. During the day we never felt threatened at all walking around town. I would hate anyone being put off from going or staying there.
I have felt more threatened at some suburbs and stations etc in Perth than I would have there.
