Can anyone tell me the road conditions are from Cairns to Cape York? Is it sealed or if it is dirt what would be the best time to go? Could I take my caravan to the top?
The road is sealed to Laura and after that is just another wide, graded road like many others in Australia. Many people tow caravans to the tip.
The road condition varies with the weather and with the traffic. It is graded regularly, so it does depend a lot on luck. One method of getting a nice smooth run north is to time your run with the opening of the road to "all traffic". That generally means that it has dried out after the wet and the first grading is completed. Coming south you will likely find some sections corrugated.
This might be considered "typical".
There is lots of great country to explore up there, so allow plenty of time......
Did the road last week, and it was good , but dusty, up to the Weipa turnoff, but bad with corugations after that. Fuel gets more expensive as you go north, and was $2.45 a litre at the Jardine ferry.Make sure everything is tight and check as you stop. Broke the axle on the boat trailer on the way back, but fixed it at the Archer River roadhouse, Great service. Caught some great fish. Bill
