Anyone know current road conditions for the unsealed road off Northern Highway about 43 km from Fitzroy Crossing via Tunnel Creek NP? On Road van but 4WD tug.
We went down that road a couple of months ago, and it shook us up quite severely! Cattle road-trains use the southern half of this road, and its VERY corrugated, plus there was a water crossing knee-deep. Our van is an "Outback" but a few things shook loose/broke, had dust everywhere. Those who went over the Gibb River Road said it was in better condition than this track
Unless its been graded recently, consider using the longer route back to Derby... Sorry, I know that's a looong way!

Hi, can't comment on the part from Fitzroy Xing to Tunnel Creek, however, we did travel from Windjana to Tunnel. The road was extremely corrugated, we found the Gibb in much better condition. (4.2l patrol towing 3.5t Kedron). This was in May, conditions change all the time.
(The Gibb from Derby to Winjana is bitumen - but narrow)

DUNMOWIN is no longer on the road and still DUNMOWIN!
You could do a day run (or camp overnight at Winjana if you have a tent) to Winjana or Tunnel Creek from Derby leaving your van at the Derby CP. They also have 4WD tours from Derby if you don't want to do it in your own vehicle. I think they also do a tour from Fitzroy Crossing, but it had stopped for some reason at the time.
Well worth the trip to see both places, make sure you have a torch and footwear than can be underwater as you will need to wade through Tunnel Creek.

Note: there is no camping at Tunnel Creek.

Now that we are back in Sydney it is time to reflect.
We left the van behind in Derby and drove to Windjana and then on to Tunnel Creek. Once we left the Gibb the going was very rough with very deep corrugations, especially from Windjana to Tunnel Creek. The trip was well worth the effort and as we arrived at Tunnel Creek we met two graders working their way up from Fitzroy Crossing. So we went back to Derby the very long way on a smooth dirt road, through the water crossing and out to the bitumen highway from Fitzroy Crossing. Took about the same time to go the long way round as the short rough way but certainly a smoother ride for passengers and Hilux.
When we did the trip in from Derby to Windjana and Tunnel creek the road across from Fitzroy xing to Gibb River road was terrible and it cracked the tank on the radiator and broke the battery plates in the battery. I don't think it's improved since then so I wouldn't be taking a van in there and drive to the road conditions. The Gibb river Road was in better condition. But you'll love both places well worth the trip.
