What a shame- the Rainbow has recently been done up! And the stuff in the museum can never be replaced - not only threcent (60's on) but the history of the town itself - could spend hours in there reading some of the memorabilia! Will be missed by many - as will the best coffee in town!

Gday...

An update - http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/latest-news/fire-destroys-nimbin-buildings/story-fn3dxiwe-1227022657111

http://www.9news.com.au/National/2014/08/13/08/24/Fire-rips-through-centre-of-Nimbin-NSW

Horrendous impact on any small town .. but this will really hurt Nimbin.

It would seem that someone got their nose out of joint no

cheers - John

Terrible news for sure. Can only hope that somewhere someone has copies and archived information elsewhere from the Museum. If so I'm sure the small community will gather and re-build.

Sad for the town of Nimbin. I remember years ago sitting out back of the Rainbow Cafe having an impromptu jam with my brother and friend, them on their guitars & myself on my blues harp. Probably didn't sound fantastic but that's not what makes the memory.

If there had been any in the vicinity of the fire you could have just breathed deeply on the smoke....wink smile

Seriously, it is very sad for the town, probably the nearest town with a reputation to this one in WA would be Balingup because of the Magic Mushrooms that grow in the area.

Around 2001 we visited Nimbin and decided to take a short cut from Nimbin across to Kyogle, not sure of the condition of the road now but the bitumen ran out very soon and the road was limestone and peppered with sharp limestone rocks, shook hell out of our Avan Aliner camper trailer and we lost a couple of bolts from our roof vents. furious

Maybe that's why I was very relaxed in Byron Bay Vic, cos it's just down the road sort off.

So sorry to see this. I remember the Rainbow Café from the early 70's, thought it would be there forever.

Trouble is - I really don't think much of the stuff I the Museum would be archived - it told the history of the town, from the timber cutters right through to today - it is a great place to visit, the whole town I mean, has a great atmosphere - have heard people say they would be scared to go there - why? they are all just normal people, who have found their niche - like we all try to do at some stages of our lives.

Looks like we will have to call in there on the way to Qld, and boost the economy a bit - by staying in the caravan park, and frequenting the shops I mean of course!  The shops across the road are the ones that have gone, I think.

The road from Kyogle in, is a bit rough, but the other way, from the Lismore end has been improved a bit - still narrow though.

The caravan park at Nimbin is quite good - not bad price $28 from memory, when you book in they give you a voucher for your next stay, stay three, only pay for two! Walking distance to town, and if you have stayed there before, the park is very well behaved now.

Thanks delepan, sounds like an improvement to when I went over it, but it was in 2001.  smile

Thanks for the update too Jules, we didn't stay in the caravan park, only visited the town and shops at the time.smile
