Welcome to the gang reesehead, enjoy here and out in the playground.
Camps Australia Wide is a book that lists most free/alternative camp sites Aussie wide, it also lists some low cost CVP's in a area too. you can get a book with just the list or another one has pics for each site as well, very good to give an idea what they look like.
You can also get one for caravan parks.
I have both plus Wickicamps app for my phone and iPad. I use both as Wicki has comments, cost and pics on most sites. The more people that add comments etc the better it will get.

CAW 7 is the current one - but no. 8 will be out in Feb/Mar 2015 - sometimes at camping shops or places like RACV shop they mark them down - you can go online and order one as well - just put in Camps Australia Wide - you will find it.
Because it runs for two years, you can go online and get updates as people report changes. We met some people couple of weeks ago who do the book, and they were going around Australia taking photos of spots for the new issue,
For some campers it is known as "the bible"!!! Wikicamps is a good thing to have as well, on your phone or Ipad - has comments ad pricing about camps.
We use both in conjunction.

As mentioned the RAC sell it (RAC discount to members) as well as camping stores and large book shops (Dymocks give 10% discount to seniors, not sure about the others).

another point is that you have made the price of Camps by not using a CP for 3 nights, well worth the cost
I don't carry a pc and my mobile is the old type that can't use apps, so the Camps book does me, it also has Hema Map pages so saves the cost of buying a separate map book.
Not very explicit were they. These books list free and cheap camp-sites as well as rest areas along the roads. You have the Maps from the Hema Atlas. These maps have numbered symbols that refer to the text entries in following pages that explain a bit about the sites. You may not have seen the link at the bottom of the page in the link given above. Whoever if you go to this link you will see some sample pages.
