We travelled that road last year saw lots of goats , even in the middle of the road , emus and a few pigs so watch out for them. Yes I would try not to stop at Wilcannia, not as scarey as it sounds though, we also bought our petrol in one of the side streets there instead of on the main road , was a lot cheaper. I think it was where the truckies fill up. There is a nice park just out of Bourke and also Bourke is worth a look around. If you are heading through Roma and want a caravan park you need to book they fill up very quickly due to the mining in the area. Lightning Ridge is a great place to visit, good free camp before you enter or we stayed in the newest park which is down towards the hot bath swimming pool which was great, highly recommend d this park. Good free park at Surat just across the bridge . Hope a few of these ideas help you, depends which way you are actually heading after Broken Hill. Lake Theresa Dam was another spot to stay out of Clermont cost about $10 for the night but lots of people there.

We did this recently not much to add except stay if you are stopping over in Coonabarabran stay at the John Oxley Park, great owners and lots of space. We told to just find a spot we liked and setup there. In Airlie avoid the Airlie Cove Park inless you have a van less than 18ft as all blocks are small, sloped and very awkward to get into.

Broken Hill CP, on Adelaide rd, is the one we stay at. Quite a bit to see and do at Broken Hill. Don't miss the Silverton area.
There is an excellent caravan park 3km east of Wilcannia. Opened last year. Warrawong on the Darling CP. The powered sites overlook a billabong of the river - very pretty. Great amenities block.
We found the Cobar CP was fine, last year.
Which way are you going then?
