Thieves love the new 'touch' system too I believe....if they get their hands on a card they can make multiple smallish purchases without having to do anything but 'touch' the handpiece...no pin required....no identity....purchase and run....my dog could make a purchase with it in his mouth....as a former bank Manager I recommend a pin number for your own security...thieves would be less likely to target stealing cards if there was only the 'pin' system IMO. The signing feature was not effective either as we've all signed in the past and noted that many employee's did not even check the signature.... A good 4 digit code is to think of any Town's Postcode that you like, and use that pin number...you may forget the pin but you will never forget the Town and postcodes are displayed on line etc.. Hoo Roo
P.S. a while ago I stayed at a leading Hotel in Melbourne and they insisted on taking my credit card into the next room to be photostated supposedly for any drink fridge purchases etc....one week later I received a phone call from NAB asking if I was in London buying substantial sporting gear......obviously my signature had been photostated as well....it did not cost me anything but new Platinum NAB card had to be issued...signatures afforded very little protection.....don't let your cards out of your sight when you have to give details of your card in advance of your stay...

I might have some fun next week. I have 2 credit cards issued by Philippine Banks. They don't use PINs, only signatures. I'm thinking of using one of them next week at Woolworths. !! When I e-mailed Citibank in Manila, they replied that they only use a PIN for ATMs, not for EFPOS. But on doing a bit of research, I found that credit cards issued by foreign banks are exempt, and signatures can still be used. Australia is apparently the only Country moving to PIN only. Imagine the number of foreign tourists in Australia on any given day. Are they to be denied use of their foreign issued cards ! How will that affect the economy !!

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
I was amazed at the number of places in the USA that still used paper & signatures. But not so in Hawaii.
It's a strange country .. So far ahead of the world in many things but so far behind in a multitude of others .. Like this one, & paper banknotes including $1 bills, lack of consistent regulations on such things as plumbing etc etc.
Europe has been on pin only for a number of years, in the past I have written in the signature panel please ask for photo ID, years ago changed all of my pin no's to the same for all cards.
Hint for remembering Pin No's
Us blokes seem to have a hard time remembering dates of anniversary's and partners birthday's so pick the last 4 numbers of you Mums Phone No, or if you were a serviceman the 1st or last 4 no's of your service no, you will never forget these.
Every so often I will change my pin no but still using part of one of the important numbers in my life that I will never forget.
What is amazing I work in retail and the amount of people who have their pin no written on a piece of paper in their wallet or purse astounds me, it like giving someone the key to your life.
Big Gorilla...The UK went to PIN only a number of years ago, we were caught out a few years ago and couldnt pay for items by credit card as we did not have a PIN...

I stand corrected. Doing a bit of research and reading some of the posts after mine, it appears Australia is catching up.

I have an Amex card and was concerned that they told me I will not get a chip card and pin until mid next year.
Went to use the card today, and the attendant said "sure, but you will have to sign - we don't accept Amex pin numbers".
So much for everyone going to pin numbers.

A trick to remember or be able to look up your pin. Change your pin to the postcode of a certain place such as the town/ suburb you were born in,/ married in/ worked at etc. Then should you forget or get the number sequence jumbled as we often do, you just need to look up the postcode of that special place. Easy to remember a town than four numbers some times.

I don't have a credit card but I do have the Australia Post Visa Card. It was always a problem trying to buy something online etc, so when this came out I jumped at it. I don't have a PIN for it, so not sure if that will change.
As for a PIN on my Debit cards, I use my old sign on number from my working days. It was 'in my head' for 12 years, so it was a logical choice. And nobody else knew it. My parents used their old service numbers.
Unfortunately, according to a report in the news - and a photocopy of the receipt involved - ALDI charge a % for using a credit card (PIN or otherwise) and a smaller % for using a DEBIT card with PayWave. They are considering it as a 'EFTPOS' payment for some reason ... but a Debit card inserted and used with a PIN does not attract a surcharge.
Ask them next time you are there
Apparently, there are other business doing the same thing. I think it is only something like 0.5% ... not much - but still a surcharge.
Cheers - John

Used my Visa Credit card issued by a Philippine Bank yesterday at K-Mart. I told the girl the card was issued by a foreign Bank and had no PIN. She said that's ok, just swipe it and sign...I did..

BUGGA, my policy is NEVER put bank info online or in email's
I believe there is a one month transition period, during which time they will try to get you to pin, but still accept signatures.
Wonder what happens after that, if you say you do not have a pin, will they ask for the meal you have just eaten back?
if someone was able to scan the information from your card while it was in your pocket, they are limited in how much they can spend on it before the merchant asks them for a pin, and if they try repeated transactions in the same place, the bank security software will pick it up. I believe the banks will refund any fraudulent spend, as long as you tell them in good time, so check your statement regularly.
