Stopping unwanted data usage....

Gday...

There was a post earlier complaining about increased data usage without knowing why.

One suggestion was that Facebook were now 'auto-downloading' and 'auto-playing' videos when you load FB - or scroll past a video.

I just came across this and have made the setting change. I hope it works and helps others.

I would turn the Auto Play off so the video's only run when you click them.

Why waste your Wi-Fi data.(which in turn comes from your internet connection). Many like me have a dongle setup (4g or 3g) in the MH or Caravan which will also very quickly diminish your available download limits.

Face book should be made liable for the massive data download costs that they imposed on their clients with this ridiculous change they made to your settings.

cheers

Mike

Thanks RL, just turned the auto-play off. I have a facebook page, but don't feel entirely comfortable with their privacy or lack of it.

If Facebook did this without your consent or knowledge, isn't that the same as Theft, or Fraud ?  It would be interesting to have a Legal opinion about this.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Thanks for the info John, I think the thread you are referring to was one I made, see below.  I don't visit Facebook very often but am registered so will make that change on my desktop, I don't have it on the other devices.

When I finally got a smart phone earlier this year I started installing the Facebook app until the terms and conditions appeared and I quickly stopped the process. Essentially by installing the app you agree to Facebook's terms and conditions that allow them to effectively commandeer your phone and access all data on it and do what they want with it without seeking your permission to do so. So if you do have the Facebook app on your phone you have given Facebook permission to what the want with your phone and the data on it .... sorry about that.

Hey D & D
Your exactly right...I dont know why people (users) think they can download many FREE programs like these
and these dont have any strings attached. They just dont think deep enough or read about it.
"Its all magical......." and its FREE.... yeah right... nothing in this world is actually free...
How many times have you heard users say..."How did that get there?" It was part of the install which they didnt see
or just pressed "Typical Install" not custom.

As for these social media programs... They think ..."Everyone else is doing it ..so why not me" ...thats what they use....?
.thats what social media relys on...thats how they make the billions each year...
or dont the users think about that? Thats the very reason I and many of my other IT businesses, delete all these Tool bars etc ...

They are definately not needed to operate any system safely...and most waste RAM and take extra time to load & perform &
slow search engines (thats another topic) and use extra unwanted data....
Hardly any users actually read the Company fine print of exactly what these will do with your data ...p13 on ..etc
Any that actually do only read ....p1-5 ....
By Accepting ...well... hey .....the skys the limit...you just give them absolute consent......and what ...you didnt know that?

Sorry Sheba...you gave away all your rights to do anything when you press "Accept" so its not illegal and you have no rights to contest it...
and if you do ... well its will cost you big time....for bringing it up....

There are many users with many of these other so called "social media essential" freebies which gather your data and on-sell it
to third parties .. thats WHY you got it for FREE ... and thats WHAT they do to make MONEY....also again of course, with your absolute consent...

Installing these gives them access to your storage pics...data...history...favourites ...type of machine.... web sites visited ...user names etc etc etc...
dependant on the program...when you connect to your ISP ...you use....a username and password (recorded) to gain an IP address
for your connection. Thats how it works...

I dont want to scare the all the users but........ if you read your device you use, or the devices web site, or the op software instructions
carefully.... (most users never will .. even after they buy it ) you can turn this all off, without effecting any download ..
(Intel chipsets are another...)

Then you can say YES to Accept & Download... but the device bars its access use. But very few actually change it.
All these large site programs etc are one of the many continually hacked....info stolen ...Daily.... major companies get hit by the constant barrage
of hackers every day...Firewalls boucing them off continually ....the world is full of them....(we are talking Major software companies)
its a digital world..... There are some very smart people out there....and they have, all the time in the world to work it out...

The bottom line is .... machines work fine with good Antivirus / clean registeries / and clean startup menus without all the (everyone uses it ..programs)
quick touch, lazy press buttons or bars etc.... which also take up RAM and slow the machine with extra work.

The size of those bars installed, should at least tell the user "Hey thats its doing more than just the few links." But they dont look.

My Advice ....Use initals for names and less accurate info for addresses and suburbs...on non important sites....
tell them the least they need to know .......and then less.
If you ask these users "Would you stand on a box in Central Park blasting out your private info .) "No Of course not"
Well then.....why the hell do it over the internet using these programs ....which store it for all time...? are you serious?....
someone.. somewhere will take notice at sometime....

Also when you delete this stuff from these sites... do you really think thats its gone for ever....? crazy.....well I hate to tell you ...it isnt...
What do they think these companies do all day... sit on the backsides and play with pens...
Backups? Backups....marketing .... make more money....When I have said "What they dont backup" ....Their look says it all
Like hell ...someones job depends on those backups.... some do it every hour....

My Advice ....Tell em nothin ...take em nowhere... Anyway ..I will get off my box....
Just think of the consequences when you download something or go to install ....Ask yourself "what else does this do?"
90% chance you wont install it...

Cheers
KT

I was horrified when for 2 months in a row I used up the 4g data on my mobile WiFi within a couple of days. I was still able to use the WiFi for the rest of the month but at a very slow Speed. When the data rolled over the next month I was very careful to watch what was uploading and downloading and the time it was taking and  checked regularly on Telstra 24/7 app the data being used. It became obvious that Facebook, photos and Windows updates were the culprits,  this is what I realised was happening and I have now taken the steps to minimise the usage

....... New Photos and other stuff on my laptop and iPad were automatically being synced with Cloud, OneDrive and/or DropBox which I have on all devices  .... Really just being over cautious about loosing my photos ...... Will now just save to external drives And not put photos on these apps.

....... I have a Facebook Travel Page where I keep family and friends updated on our travels.  The uploading of photos to FB was taking more data than I realised ... I will wait until I have free Wifi or get home to uploaded photos to my FB page

........  Windows updates were happening ... I have turned these off and only update virus definitions And what I consider important updates.  The biggest Problem was Windows 8.1 was also trying to install ... Huge file that one ..... I just can't instal it now, so will get a computer tech to do it when I get home As apparently you just can't get around not installing it! He can also check what useless program's are on my laptop and get rid of them.  Half the stuff on the machine I have no idea what they are or do and if they were part of the original instal.

........ And the biggest culprit was just me because I was in the habit of leaving the WiFi connected instead of just turning it off when I did not need the internet..... That's when the photo syncing was happening.

this month still still has 2 weeks to go and I have just over 3 G of data left so I believe just being aware of what you are doing is the secret. I also only ever use one search engine and one browser And don't download additional toolbars or tick boxes for,all those great freebie must have programs.

anyway, hope my experiences can benefit someone out there ... Not sure if it is the answer for everyone, but it appears to be for me!

KT has it in a nutshell, one more tip IF you do try to download something NEVER click on TYPICAL always use CUSTOM and you can un tick anything you do not want, if there is no un tick option ditch the program.

Another tip, GET RID OF FACEBOOK AND TWITTER, they are rubbish programs IMHO
