Broken MH key

The key that opens my gas bottles door has snapped off and fallen inside. Ii can actually still lock and unlock and open it BUT it is the same key that opens the toilet cassette door and guess what it will not open it.  Any ideas please? it is a Mercedes Sprinter. i will ring the people in NSW that fitted it out tomorrow, but I was wondering whether this has happened to anyone else.

Hi Judy

if you can remove the broken bit and take the complete key, even if it's in two in two parts, a skill key cutter would be able to reproduce a new key for you. Failing that, once you have opened the lock most likely you will see a brass back nut at the back of the lock. If you remove that nut the complete latch will come apart, trot off to any good hardware store with all the parts and simply pick up an exact recut key replacement. They are mot expensive.

Two choices then if that's not possible. Take the disassemble latch to a locksmith and ask him to make a brand new key for that lock that way the key would suit both lockers. It's not an expensive operation Either The only other possibility is that both latches are removed ( drilled out ) and replaced with keyed a like latches.

or just take the odd lock to a locksmith and see if it can be keyed to the rest...saves heaps of aggro

Thanks all...I have taken the lock to the locksmith and although the cylinder and spring all come apart the bit where the broken key is in is a sealed unit. I am trying to locate a whole new lock but proving quite difficult.  A bit of a saga that's for sure.  Trakka do not use them any more, I have contacted a company in QLD and waiting to hear if they can source a new lock.  The locksmith is still working on it smile

The locksmith finally sourced a blank key and I believe it to be a Yamaha Bike key. Anyway 1 week later it works. I just have to put it back together in daylight.   I now have 2 spare keys and are getting extra keys of all I have cut tomorrow.  I will have a spare set in the van and a set at home.  Perseverance and some clever work by the locksmith.. I had sourced new locks at about $70 ea. and I needed 2 so instead just cost $35 for the 2 keys.
