Boring health issues

Got tired of going to the doctor with boring complaints (you know what it's like after a certain age) - creaky knees, nasty cough, aches & pains.  So this year I have been making an effort to make the doctors work a bit harder to find out what is wrong with me.  So far this year I have had Temporary Bilateral Loss of Sight (lasted 15 seconds & I didn't lose consciousness).  Numerous tests & cause still a mystery.  Then a few weeks ago I decided to grow a funny spiny thing on my right cheek.  Turned out is was a Keratin Horn.  Had it removed plus the squamous cell cancer that was lurking under it.  So this week I thought I would still continue on with weird medical matters & on Tuesday night I fronted up to Emergency with a sort area on my temple which then started to cause swelling on my eyelid & further down my cheek.  This one turned out to be Temporal Arteritis.  Just got out of hospital after 6pm today.  Treatment - MEGA doses of steroids.  Well that foils my chances of being in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.  I won't pass a drug test now & I was looking forward to entering into the 50m shuffle.

A couple of funny things while in hospital.  I rung keith to bring in my current medications - spelling them out carefully.  So in he came with them in a bag & of course the nurses have to check them & the dosages on the labels.  Well low & behold amongst them was a bottle of ear drops for the dog we are currently dog sitting.  Now that gave the nurses a few chuckles. When they eventually found me a bed in a ward where was it? - Maternity.  Now there's a good place to put a 75yr old.  Isn't life funny sometimes.

Well the young ones make us feel younger sometimes,, my grandies in Darwin did last 3 weeks, until we played soccer and cricket,,, ah the aches. But I have to admit maternity is going back a bit too far. Anyway kids are great, I still love watching kids play,, the innocence doesn't last long enough these day IMHO.

Get well,, my doc loves my visits (aprt from what I pay him) I wait and get a list and go and see him "to get my money's worth",, lol. When we moved from Darwin to Adelaide my only criteria for a GP (which I asked the staff about) was which doctor has the best sense of humour,, and he does.

I hope all works out ok for you.

I think it's important to have regular check ups. I've been doing it annually since the age of 40. I have a full blood count, X-Ray and if I can get away with it, a CT scan. Every 2 years I have an ECG. My theory is that if a nasty is developing somewhere and is picked up early, you have a good chance of survival. My checkup for 2014 is next Monday July 21.

I've had many friends who never went to a Doctor. Most of them have passed. Something goes wrong, they go to a Doctor for the first time in years, to hear they have weeks or months to live. I saw a lot of neglect when I lived in the Philippines. Booze is cheap, a beer is 50 cents, a bottle of rum less than $2.00. Expats drink like it's going out of fashion. Many of my friends there have passed from excessive drinking.

Take care of yourselves out there. Proper diet, exercise and see a Doctor for a check up at least annually.

Last year I had a few 20 min. warnings with regard to my gall bladder.  When the big one finally hit, I was at the Doctors, in agony.  Seriously, I'd have 5 babies before I went through that pain again.

Turns out it was ulcerated, one humungus stone, and "full of gunk".

I requested an ambulance, and was refused, as they don't consider gall bladders urgent enough.  Imagine this, sitting on a rattling tram, holding a sick bag, rolling in pain, holding my Doctors referral, before I was admitted via. emergency room.

Thank goodness, all turned out well.
