I have friends wanting to fly drive to New Zealand both islands. Has anyone done this and what is best, Motorhome, Caravan. How long would be a good time to cover both islands.
Thanks

Just be aware that it is expensive to take any vehicle across on the ferry. I gather people leave them in Wellington and pick up another on the other side. Unless you are comfortable towing I would suggest a motor home unless you are staying on the main roads. Maybe check out the cost of a car and stay at motels - they are abundant and unlike Aus the distance between towns is not great.

We did both islands a few years ago. Hired a cheap car & used cabins in caravan parks. Most had cooking facilities in them or a campers kitchen nearby. I had done my sums before we went & found this a cheaper option than hiring a motorhome. We flew into Christchurch, picked up car there & then gave it back before going on ferry to north island & they gave us a different car then to do north is. & we eventually flew out of Auckland.
Motorhome for sure . Can stay in and around some Great Lakes , rivers especially down South Island . Book the Ferry way before ! It will be way cheaper than buying on the day ..
