I am seeking ways to heat proof a van awning.

With summer now only 3 months away, I am seeking information as to if there is any way to heat proof a caravan awning.

By this I mean, is there a substance like a paint - lacquer, stainer, that one can paint on the upside of an awning that will reject a certain amount of the sun rays?

Of course we do not want to hinder the life and performance of the awning.

The only way I have found to keep the annex area cool is to run the AC with the windows on the annex side open.

I'll be interested to see the responses to your question.

I have a sail track above my awning that I can fit a second roof which creates an air gap between the two

We have pool noodles above the rafters and 90% shade cloth over the top in another sail track as suggested above, I do like the idea of opening the windows for the cool air to come through.

I also saw a small 12V ceiling fan for annexes on ebay, anything that stirs the air is worth looking at, even a small 12V fan works.

Safe travels

I also am considering one of those tarps that have a uv ray reflector side and arranging same off the van by and above the awning by say 6 to 8 inches and attaching the tarp to poles and ropes.
Can not find any other way in addition to what has been suggested.

It is well and good to insulate the "above" or "roof" area, and most of the suggestions are commendable.

But please, what is going to stop the heat from entering from the sides????????????

Cheers, KB

In the days of long ago when we didn't worry about water usage rates, we used to put a sprinkler on the roof.

Worked very well but not too practical or resource sensitive I suppose.

Those campers who erect their tents under a very large silver tarp with good over hangs seem to have a good set up for heat or rain.  Not so good in high winds though.
