Is there much difference between an automatic or a manual on campervan hiace?

Hi. I am looking at an older 2000 Toyota hiace and have found a few. I like the thought of the automatic but worry the fuel consumption would be much higher than the manual. Then theres diesel or petrol- more petrol ones out there. Anyone have any knowledge/ experience with this? Cheers Didi

Most automatic petrol vehicles have a higher fuel consumption than manual, my 2006 Hi Ace was auto petrol can't tell you the exact consumption, it wasn't enough to worry about.   I prefer auto to manual but depends on the user.   You will get better consumption on manual in general.  Not sure about auto diesel however.

I had a manual Ford Transit diesel campervan but with 6 forward gears found it a pain in the butt for gear changes in the metro area, ok on the open road though, good fuel consumption.

I would be inclined to get what you feel better at driving rather than fuel consumption but that is your choice, get what you feel comfortable with.

Hi Didi.  I have a '98 Hi-ace Auto Diesel.  From memory, [it's a while since I did the test,] I think I use 10 ltrs per 100 k's.  The guys can tell you if that's reasonable.

Happywanderer has a later Model, but I'm not sure if hers is Petrol or Diesel.

Cheers,

Sheba.

To be honest I don't think there's much in it...

My advice is if you find one you like an the type of transmission doesn't worry you then buy it..

These days petrol and diesel are much the same price and you get much the same mileage out of them so again if you find one you like then go for it..

That sounds about right Sheba.   In my early days of traveling around I kept meticulous records of fuel consumption but these days unless I notice excessive use for some reason I don't bother, just enjoy the travels and refuel when you have too.

You will have an idea didi of how far a tank will get you and as long as your fuel gauge is ok it is easy to work out where you will next need to refuel or top up.   My last modern vehicle even showed an estimated distance for the fuel remaining.

I agree with OBB, don't stress out over fuel types etc, just get what vehicle suits you best.

Find the more weight the diesel takes over fuel wise..
Most fuel consumption is still up to the nut though..
