Fuel consumption across the Anne Beadell Hwy.

Hi members, I'm just new to the forum.

I ask for some advice -

We're planning a trip across the Anne Beadell hwy.

Our vehicle is a late model Mazda BT 50 twin cab.

Our concern is the amount of extra fuel we should take for the section between Coober Pedy  and the roadhouse just in W.A., about 750k .

The vehicle does about 10L/100k in normal use and had a 80 L tank.

You would understand that we are tight for room but want to take a responsible approach.

We are accompanied by two other vehicles.

I would most grateful to anyone could assist in this matter, and anyone who has done the trip who may be kind enough to give us some advice On the trip.

Hi George.

               If you are doing the Anne Beadell you are not going to get 10/ per 100 out of your BT50 as the track is heavy going in parts. You don't say how much gear you are taking or if you are towing a Van but if you are NOT towing I would not recommend you take any less than 60 L with you in reserve. I would not attempt the trip in summer under any circumstances and if you are tight for room I used to always load my water first as it is the most important ( 10 L Per Person Per Day ) my first aid kit ( not one bought from Super Cheap or such ), my extra fuel, my spare parts and tools and then all the rest. I would take a sat phone, these can be rented or a Personal Location Beacon, either is a must have. Hope this helps and have a great trip.

Thank you. We are not towing, I thought about 60 L of fuel and only 60L of water. I take note of your advice, thanks again.

George Hi,

The ABH in IMO is the best "Remote Track" that is reasonably easy to access. My first crossing E_W about 5 years ago,met 3 others, the first being late on the third day. The travel is with the dunes so not overly arduous, the corrugation will test the very best of suspensions & back(If shocks,tyres etc are not 100% replace). Fuel I figure You should allow approx 15L per 100klm. plus spare.

If travelling E_ W first water availble is Ilkurlka RH & reasonably regular after that, I allow myself 5litres per day plus 20 litres that is stored for emergency only.

You should allow at least 7 days there is a lot to see The best time I went was mid October (was fortunate that it was a mild spring)The wild flowers were almost worth the Corrugations.

Thanks Mike, the vehicle is new so all that stuff should be ok. We will carry an extra spare. I note your view on water.
Hope we see some wildflowers, I'm an enthusiastic orchid grower here at Orbost ( good climate for natives ) where the Snowy runs in.

Ilkurlka RH is the only fuel source between Coober Pedy and Laverton and they are seasonally open, so check with them before you depart. 08 90371147.
The ABH is a great drive, but quite remote. You will need to resolve any issues on the road yourself.

We drove from Nullarbor via Cook and Vokes Hill Corner then west on the ABH in 2006 (towing a boat and lots of extra fuel). It is not a difficult road, but is scratchy in some places.
Apart from one guy at Ilkurlka, we never saw another soul at all from Cook to just before Laverton.
