Reserving free camp sites

What do you think about this

this happened at gunning not long ago. We pulled in around 2.30-3pm and there was and area in between these vans that was roped off. I went over and said "hi im just wondering why this area is roped off cold you please give us a little room. To my amazement the man said hey blondie these spots are taken you will have to move on. I said taken. You could fit 5 vans here at least. He said look i didnt realise blondes were stupid now move on. We went and parked up in the spot you stop for during the day. Yep they fit another 8 vans in their roped area. GRRRR :(

this is a post from another site

Unfortunately some people only care about the person they see in the mirror. We stopped at Longreach and went into town before we put the awning out. Got back and some clown had parked that close we couldn't put it out anyway.

Free camps are just that free and first come first in , I would have parked in there and told him where to go.

Last time we were in Gunning my husband chatted to the policeman on the street. Maybe a friendly chat with him wouldn't have gone astray. We thought the motorhome parked parallel with the bank of the creek was bad enough but this tops it.

Just be happy that 99% of the people you meet at free camps are nice. It's just a pity the other 1% are either selfish, thoughtless or just plain idiotic.

yes you are right tezza we also are members of families on the road which is for obviously for families travelling and unfortunately many are being intimidated by the older generation (grey nomads )this is a shame as we are all out there to enjoy our wonderfull country,-- situations where grey nomads are setting out witches hats to reserve free camp space and roping off areas as discussed this to me is just un Australian if there was space let everyone enjoy and make happy hour HAPPY  don't the retirees miss there grand kids ?wouldn't it be nice to have a play with the travelling kids maybe even educate them a little in life skills, we are not talking about silly people camping that close that you cant put your awning out but just average travellers wanting to share a bit of public land without being called stupid blonde or idiots if mature people want respect they should also show some

tezza and tomoko

PLEASE do not tarnish all the older travellers with the same brush......

Just because a couple of people have done that does NOT mean that we all do it.

First in best dressed is the policy at any free camp - and if you do come across someone who is trying to intimidate other travellers by blocking it off - either telling them to pull their head in OR move to a different location.

We welcome anyone who wants to join us when we camp for the night BUT not right up against our door!!!

I for one was so disgusted to read this happening and should I ever come across such rude people as a Justice of the peace for Victoria would have a few words to them and if they continue to block the way bring in the local police how can people be so selfish by doing this.

Obviously if you had parked there they would have had rowdy happy hours with their friends, even on purpose, so probably just as well you didn't park there.

But if you wanted to push the point, they cannot "reserve" and area, first in best dressed, but would it be worth having to put up with them later.

They would probably make a lot of noise anyway so the further you could get from them the better!

hi everyone thanks for your comments, firstly I personaly am not complaining about normal happy travelling nomads I am nearly one myself, this incident happened to a family on the families on the road site, I posted it as I was very interested to see if any of these inconsiderate un Australian nomads wished to reply and explain how they think they could justify there actions, laying out witches hats and roping off areas in a free camp area but as yet the response has only been from travellers who disagree with there actions, thank you----but as expected NO RESPONSE from these greedy so and so,s ---families are travelling this great country as well as grey nomads and pull up at free camps for the same reasons as all the freedom of choice the camp fires the friendly happy hours, my wife and I both have cancer and two young children and we will be on the road soon full time enjoying precious time with them, and if I pull into a FREE camp and encounter these ratbags they best be ready to take me on if I,m tired and driven hundreds of klms only too be intimidated by them they best watch out,and my wife due to cancer treatments is very hormonal and we all know how that can be --lol I hope we all enjoy this great country and we welcome any grandmas we encounter to have a play with the kids

Good wishes for your treatment tezza and tomoko, I hope it goes well and your are able to get on with life.

It may be these morons are not on the same site as you so probably haven't seen your post.

This GN forum is not just for oldies and I think you will find any GN's you come across are a different kettle of fish entirely, being a member you are one of the forum, so if you are camped up somewhere and you see a GN sticker make yourself known, you will be most welcome. smile

Good luck for you both with your treatment. So many everywhere have been confronted with a cancer diagnosis and inconsiderate people. There are so many great people around as well, young and older. I hope you meet the nice people.

Not sure why you wanted to park in amongst a group ?
I prefer to have my own space and if I see a group camped I do one of two things.
1. I get as far away as possible.
2. If I cant get far enough away I would move to another site.
I don't mind a chat but I prefer to be far enough away that their noise (laughing fighting music and generator etc) that it cant be heard at least inside my van but preferably outside as well.
I may be seen as a recluse but Many of us nomads are content with our own company and don't need a group to bolster our ego or protect us from the boogey man.
When you get on the road you will probably find that solitude is preferred much of the time. Company for a while is OK but in small doses and normally an hour or so is enough.
If I pull into a camp site and is has a lot of people I drive out again and find somewhere else. There are thousands of good camp sites so never restrict yourself to the one and stay because you feel you have to.
Regards
Brian

Sorry this has happened to you... Rudeness has no values...This has happened to a lot of other people including us...I did say to the man involved I hope you do not get stuck on the road because there is a lot of people travelling out here and at the end of the day we are like family..I call us the Family Travellers....We Will help each other...He walked away and I am pretty sure his tail was in between his legs...He did not look back...We did move on and was happy to find another place within kilometres down the road...where we meet some lovely people...Shared stories and had a lovely night...The Stars Cater for all...Yet there was a shadow of Doubt over this mans face...

Too true Tezza.

The worst we encountered was a large WA registered motor home who set up in the public camping area near a big popular dam. Not only did he (GN) block off one of the locals picnic tables with the MH he then parked his car right beside the next picnic table so locals couldn't use it.

I was speaking to locals the whole time we were there and they stated that this is why they are starting to loath grey nomads,,,, as the GN's seem to think they have exclusive access to everything - their words not mine. So they see their family days impacted by 2 selfish people taking up 2 picnic tables that could accommodate 2 families on the weekends, when the MH had all the facilities and tables etc for their use.

BUT I do believe most of us are not like that, however we are tarnished long term by some obviously.
