We were there October 2013 and from memory it was $25/night.
Amenities were clean and there is a little creek running thru the camp
And you need to keep your years open as you might see some platypus
Really enjoyed the couple of days there
Apparently there are a couple of Free over nighters or rest area's North and Just South of this place Have a look at caravancaravan.com.au It will tell you all you wish to know......Books are as useless as Politians

I always leave my camping area cleaner than I found it.
We were also there in October 2013 and think we paid either $15 or $18 for one night. We also seem to recall that the caretaker lived in a house opposite the showgrounds entrance, that there was a dump point on the entrance road, that the area close to the creek was a good camp spot, and that we never want to use the laundramat again that is on the LHS of the road on the way out to Glen Innes.
Be aware that Tenterfield can get chilly.

If you have a smart phone or tablet WikiCamps is an app that you will find very handy it shows a number of free sites in the vicinity of Tenterfield the cost for the app is only $5
Eg it shows the price at the showground as now being $25 for powered site and describes it as fairly basic and Tenterfield Lodge as $28 and rated as good and Craigs as $25 with good rating.
There doesn't appear to be any free sites close in and the pick of them appears to be Bald Rock Campground 23.2 k north of town.
Cheers
