Info on road conditions from Cobar to Emerald Qld

Has anyone been on the road from Cobar to Bourke, then onto north Qld towards Emerald?

In my Tomtom I got no unsealed roads its showing me that route and using the Dawson development road it it sealed or unsealed?

Also how is the rest stop at  Whyandra with a donation of power and how many sites have power available?

Any info be great.

Gday...

I have travelled Cobar, Bourke, Cunnanulla, Charleville, Augathella, Tambo to Blackall and then places both east and west from there.

I haven't travelled Tambo to Alpha or Tambo to Springsure which I am fairly sure are still unsealed. Hopefully others will have more up-to-date info on those roads and their condition.

I have stayed at Wyandra and found it a very good camp. There are solar showers, flushing toilets and plenty of space. There was power there when I last stayed, but because of abuse by travellers and very few donations, I have heard unsubstantiated rumours the power has been discontinued. [edit: if power is till there, it is on one post with I think had four points. It was the overloading of these four points that contributed to the disconnection of power - unsubstantiated]

There is a van park now behind the General Store which gets good reviews. You pass it on the way to the campground. Cheap and basic but friendly and I think they have a "management initiated" happy hour each night.

Here are some photos of the Wyandra camping spot anyway for what it's worth.

Cheers - John

Thanks  John for the info, sadly some caravaners expect everything free don't like paying a small donation of a few $'s a day then wonder why that service isn't available anymore?

Is there a care taker there anymore as showen  in my camps 3 book?

Was like Point Lowly out side of Whyalla, the council had a power pole with 4 outlets for caravaners (free power), guess what a few greedy ones used all the power points so no one else could use them as 2 buses used 2 power plugs on each unit.

So the power poles were removed by council, how do people expect a free service and cant share it? (greed)

Pic below off google earth is where the x is was the power pole, the newer toilets were not built then.

Gday...

There has been no caretaker there when I have been there - at least none visited.

The power pole remains and the power-box, but power has been disconnected from the power box.

Story is that 12 vans and motorhomes were there one Saturday night and ALL plugged into the four powerpoints, using powerboards. That apparently overloaded the circuits so it was disconnected.

It is still a nice place to spend a day or two. There is only the General Store and Pub in the town but they welcome visitors. A great effort for such a small community and they certainly deserve the donations.

cheers - John

As John said , north to Barcaldine then east to Emerald . It IS Main Hwy all th way .

Can get some flood damage at times.

I would go nth from Cobar to Charleville then east to Roma , then nth again to Emerald .

It Is also main Hwy.

In 2 minds here I might be going to Mareeba, tossing up to go through Walgett then Roma or go up through Alice springs in which is only a extra 200 km's?

Either way its going to cost me app $1,500 in petrol anyway.

Maybe at Port Augusta I flip a coin ,heads in through Cobar, tails go up  through Alice lol

Oh  its a hard life on the road confuse

From Cobar all good road to Emerald regardless of which way you choose, the way Richo offered is good, (the drive from Roma to Rolleston is beautiful, good road, magic scenery) or you could go up to Barcaldine and then head east to Emerald, not sure how Alice Springs gets into the equation, but if so, you go up to Threeways, (north of Tennant Ck, then across the Barkly to Mt Isa etc, all good road.

Where you see ".....Developmental Road" on QLD maps these are usually one lane bitumen, best to avoid in the wet season, but they mostly have hard shoulders and is safe to get the left wheels on the gravel when meeting oncomings.

Some of our QLD roads are a bit bouncy bouncy, just slow down on those bits. Keeps us awake on long trips!

Having a bit of a think here about the rest stop at  Whyandra, seems a lot of good reports in here, I may stop there and offer to be caretaker and collect the donations of say a $5 min donation  or collect what ever they donate. Only 1 condition I make is power supply even if I got to pay for it or 1/2 whatever for running my a/con in summer? I say the showers be worth $2.00 p/p at least, and maybe request $5 for a van up to 2 for a night?(no donation no stay) Try the showers at Yunta asking $5.00 and Gull truck stop at Port Augusta $4.00 and there on timers? I have checked out Telstra so I  be able to use my wireless internet there.
