CONDITION OF ROAD FROM COOKTOWN TO CAPE YORK.

We are heading to Cape York hopefully in June & would like to know what the road conditions are like from Cooktown to the tip of the Cape.... we are planning to leave the van at Cooktown & camp the rest of the way.

Will be going the easy road, not 4 x 4.

CHRIS.

We are also heading up mid June and would welcome some info on the road conditions.

Was going to tow van from Gold coast to Cains or Cooktown and leave it there. But decided to leave van home and camp all the way. Will spend a few days in T/Ville.

Will do some of the 4X4 tracks if possible.

We are also heading to Cape York about middle of June. Have heard good reports of the PDR (the good road).  We are taking our caravan as we have been told, no problems! If necessary we will leave it near Bamaga.

We finally went up to the 'Tip' on 10th August & returned around the 18th.
We travelled on the Peninsular Development Road & to be honest it wasn't a great road, very corrugated, dusty with loose gravel & stones, we collected a couple of stone chips in the windscreen, mainly from travellers coming in the opposite direction that had to be travelling over 100kls per hour, we stuck to around 80kls.
Most travellers were tenting it or towing a 'camper trailer', we wouldn't advise taking a caravan, we left ours at Cooktown.
There were also a lot of very 'deep dips' that you have to really slow down for & a bit of roadword now & again.
We were told that the road should be completely sealed in 3 years!!!

It's probably getting late in the year to be travelling now as wet season will be setting in & those 'deep dips' will fill with water & then there will be no chance of getting through.

Safe travels.

Chris.
