This is a new one. [On me, anyway.] I had a Phone call this morning, advising me that the Australian Government in Sydney, was going to pay me over $7,000 of supposed Bank overcharges, by either Bank transfer, or by Cheque. I played along, and asked for a cheque.
The caller gave me his name, Paul Johnson. [ He had what was to my ears, a decidedly African sounding accent.] He also gave me the names of his managers [3]. Ellen Jackson, Alice Wilson, and Paul Edward.
He then asked me which bank I was with, and rattled off about 8 or 10, [can't remember exactly,] none of which was mine. When I asked why he needed to know my bank if I was getting a Cheque, he said he needed to know which Bank to make it out to. ?????
Then I got a Phone No. to ring, 02-8006-1416. I was also given a Transfer No. SV 25.
I told him I wasn't sure it wasn't a Scam, and he hung up. I did ring the number, and the lady who answered, also had an African accent. [In my opinion.]
When I asked her why the Australian Government was not employing Australians, but Foriegners, for this, she hung up too.
Needless to say, they will not accept my calls since then. Have already advised Scam-watch. They advised me that for this type of Scam the usual thing was for them to request a fee of about $200 or so, to have the money released to me.
Take care,
Cheers,
Sheba.

Well done Sheba, we have to be informed and aware these days to these scum.
I had one the other day a distinctly Asian accent, telling me Telstra were going to give me $20 off my bill.
She was obviously fishing for information, but I had clammed up to let her talk, (as Maxwell Smart would say, Ah, the old silent trick!) she sputtered around a bit and I said, "that's great, I look forward to seeing a cheaper bill next month" she mumbled something and hung up.
I get regular newsletters from Telstra, special offers etc, so I knew this was fishy as soon as she spoke.
Can't be too careful, thank you for that heads up
Bevan

I don't know, maybe to these overseas folk we all seem rich in Aust, so perhaps we shouldn't blame them for trying. But we all know we are not going to get something for nothing don't we? Just heed the old saying, "if it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't". And tell them nothing!

I have had the old "I'm on a oil rig" trick tried on me when trying to sell something on Gumtree. Took a couple of emails before I realised what was going on. I have had it once since, so been lucky I spose.
I will just ask them to hang on while I get the info they are asking for and go off and do something else. I just think they will be gone when I go back. I was told that trick from a spud loving person
