GARMIN SAT NAV

About to buy a Garmin 2557, did a search on GN, and Garmin looked to be the most popular.

My question is: Is it ready to operate straight out of the box or do I have to plug in into a computer and do a set up?

Bit hard to read the instructions Spook, considering I haven't bought it yet.

Ready to use, but could take a bit longer to find satellites first time it is turned on because it doesn't know where in the world you are.

This brand is easy to use, even without the instructions, as I found out when I took a new one off the shelf, put it into my bag and flew to Sydney where I put it in a hire car and then realised it would have been a good idea to bring the instructions.

Not sure about that model but get one with lifetime map upgrades. You do need an internet connection for that, but it is straightforward.

Hendo, just be careful of what wombat has sent you cos he got a Garmin and it said turn left so he did and ended up in the lake.

Nah, Garmin are good I know a few people that have them and speak highly of them. Me, I have a Navlady that tells me where to go.

cannot read the instructions - they are all online - nothing in the box. I am pretty sure mine was ready to go but I did plug it in to the computer to update maps etc. and maybe charge the battery? Also downloaded Camp6 - love having that on although the coordinates are a little off on odd occasions. It wanted me to swim the river at Hay to get to Sandy Point!

I have this model   Nuvi 450LMT GPS with lifetime maps, also loaded it with Camps maps app.

From memory it was read to go when I got it (except for the Camps maps addition I put on it).

However I had put a few map updates on it (plugged into my pc which also charges the battery) but for some reason when I tried an update a few weeks ago I lost all my maps and could not reload them.

Not sure what happened, contacted Garmin and although it was out of warranty (over 12 months) they said as it appeared a software problem (they tested it online while I had it connected to the pc) to send the unit back to them (gave me a post free number for Garmin Oz) and they would replace it free.  That was about 3 weeks ago, am waiting for a reply and a replacement unit.

I sent them an email today to see what the current situation is, bearing in mind we have had Easter and Anzac Day holidays, I hope it hasn't got lost in the mail system etc.

Update:  Just got an email from Garmin saying my unit is currently being tested whatever that means....

I bought the Garmin 2797 recently, very easy to use and the big 7 inch display is great for us old codgers.
