Queensland

Will be heading to Queensland at the end of May, We have always travelled the Newell Highway, does any one have any ideas of a different route that we could take that has quite a few free camping spots on the way. We will be leaving from Adelaide. Would just like to see some different places along the way this time. Thanks for any help.

you could go up to broken hill , cobar, bourke then mitchell highway or cobar nyngan gilgandra and castlereagh highway. both have ample camping spots but you may need to look for them as many are not in most campsite publications. I prefer the mitchell highway as there is less traffic and more open space.

or you could turn right at Bourke across to Walgett, Lightning Ridge  Diranbandi, Nindigully and then take your pick, guess it depends where you are heading

Helena,

If You are okay with a bit of dust and roughish gravel roads.

Head to Mildura and follow the Darling River, turn off at Wentworth to Pooncarie to Menindee onto Wilcannia From Wilcannia to Bourke either side of the Darling is good, though I prefer the eastern side.

From Bourke follow the Barwon to Walgett then Collarenebri onto Moree. Or turn off at Brewarrina to Hebel.

There is plenty of good camping on this route.

The "Darling Run" is one of my favourites and suggest You could spend at least 3 or more days than you think is plenty of time.

Mike.

Why not try the Kidman Way. Griffith,Cobar,Bourke then into Qld. Lots of free camps along the way and interesting towns.

Thanks for all the routes that you have suggested, will now go to the maps and try to sort through. Not sure about rough roads as we are travelling in a Mazda whizz bang. First time on a long trip with her, Previously had an A Van Sportsliner towed by a Toyota Corolla, so this is a bit different.
