MY FIRST CYCLONE

Yep, looks like I will experience my first Cyclone, bugga. It looks like it will pass through Townsville within next 24 hours as a Cat 1 so not over concerned as we get pretty bad gale force winds and very heavy rain back home in Gippsland Vic.

The weather gods opened the sky about 3.00pm today and out the side of my daughters place where the Avan is set up is under water already. I have just put the lid down and got Avan ready for anything that comes this way, hopefully.

My granddaughter is with her dad until tomorrow so I have just taken over her room, pretty pink toosmile (don't tell wombat). I will now stay in her room until I get back out to the Avan, she is going in with mum so will love that.

I think if I stayed outside I might end up over the ditch with Mr and Mrs Kiwi smile

They just gave a report on the box and said we could get upto 300mm overnight, mmmmm.

ps as of 5am , sunday we had 194mm rain and its blowing 40knots plus at the moment. Will post conditions later.

42knots and driving rain at Horseshoe bay,7 am

You might not believe this , but we have just had 160mm of rain in an hour!    Total 453.1 mm in 12hrs!

I was thinking of you earlier today, Doug. I hope you (and the Avan) come through it OK. Let us know as soon as you can.

It's here, Ita has arrived, well the wind and rain has but not officially as it is still one hour north but boy are we copping it already. All I can say is, I'm glad it's not the 5 originally predicted.

The decision to move into the house was a good one as there is 6" of water under the Avan already, 6" to go and it will be IN the Avan, bugga.

There is also water getting in the house under the front windows but can't actually find how it is getting in, double bugga. My daughter is worried about her bond but I have said it's not her fault as she can't control mother nature. We will see how things go and if need be ring SES and put in a report and take from there.

Now not only is Ita here but I have had a duck camped on the other side of the fence that is noisy and I reckon ducks are only good for 3 things, oven, plate, my tummy. I now have frogs forming an army outside the granddaughters window, sounds big ones too and would give the duck on the other side a run for it's money as they sound like ducks.

My daughter just got word that the cat 1 could go cat 2 (people on face book saying 3 already 1 hour north) very soon. Hold on tight Bill12. Things are really starting to shake rattle and roll here as I type this. Now I'm holding on tight.

Not a good start to my 2014 northern migration hey.

I will try and keep you posted.

Very heavy rain & strong swirling winds here at Saunders Beach ATM (7am). Bruce Highway closed below Cardwell, Townsville airport closed according to the news. We've got the awning packed up, gear stowed & ready to sit this out. Van is semi protected by the house so all should be good.

There is some idiot out in the bay on his yatcht, on a mooring , with no motor, withhis sails up. Its going to come in strong northerly , up tp 60knots, by mid morn.Ihave called the coast guard, but what else can you do.Here is a pic of the current weather radar.

Stay safe. Apparently if the cyclone goes out to sea, it can rebuild momentum.

My sister and nephew live in Cooktown. My sister was moved to the shelter even though her place is a category 3 rated. My nephew stayed in his old house because of his dogs, he wouldn't leave them. His house was safe, he was hoping to loose his garage so he could get a new one, but that didn't happen. He lost his fences. The main thing is they were both safe. The last time a cyclone hit Cooktown was in 1949 and there was a large loss of lives.

Well I'm no expert but the experts say that Ita has cast her eye over us and is showing us her tail so things calming down now, movement out in the street and water everywhere but no damage apart from a little water damage around edge of carpet in front rooms that copped it full on.

Phew!

We were in Hong Kong for a typhoon years ago (cyclone). Water came into the dining room through what appeared to be completely sealed windows. I think the super, super strong winds and heavy, torrential rain are no match for anything made by humans.

Keep safe.
