April 4 Today in history

Gday...

1848  -     Leichhardt departs Roma, Queensland, on his third and final expedition, never to be seen again.

1820  -     The foundation stone is laid for what later becomes the magnificent Queen Victoria Building in Sydney.

1929  -     The only dam-burst in Australia's history to cause loss of life occurs in Tasmania.

1968  -     African American civil rights activist, Martin Luther King, is assassinated.

Cheers - John

Ah yes, the QVB. As I kid, I rode with my dad in his truck delivering stuff around Sydney on school holidays and remember the QVB when it was derelict, shored up with corrugated iron sheeting and sheets of ply. There was talk of demolishing it. Fortunately, it was refurbished instead and is now one of the jewels in Sydney's crown. Definitely worth a look if you're visiting the Big Smoke.

I worked in the Post Office there in 1968, dingy place on the York Street side. The refurbishment is fabulous, definitely a must-see if you're visiting Sydney.
