I have travelled the Newell many times - but it has been a very long time since I travelled it in its entirety through NSW. When I have moved from north to south or vice versa I have usually chosen to stay at smaller towns/areas off the Newell. I try to stay away from main highways unless I need to actually visit a town that is on that highway.
I would suggest you buy a copy of Camps Australia Wide 7 and/or the Camps 7 App they make as well perhaps. Others use Wikicamps App as well which has good reports. Armed with these I am sure you will find lots of places of various attractiveness to choose from.
Over such a long distance there are many places you can stop for a sleep - and some you could camp at for a night or two.
Without knowing how long you are going to take traversing the Newell, and whether you want to diverge from the main highway from time to time it is very difficult to detail specific places to stop. Dependent on the size of your rig (big bus/ motorhome/5th wheeler) you may find some sites restrictive for space.
Sorry I cannot be of more assistance, but enjoy the journey when you do head off.
Cheers - John

We travelled down the Newell several weeks ago, these are some of our favourite spots...
Goondiwindi , park at the Bowls Club, right next to the river,.....ask at the Information Centre..
Coonabarabran , Hickey Falls. Or Pilliga Pottery, not free, but cheap, and beautiful pottery to buy...
Peak Hill, Bogan Weir, great, peaceful spot on the Bogan River
Narandera , at the boat ramp
Tocumwal , town beach, right beside the Murray...
Hope this is helpful, have a great trip.
Cheers Lyn
There's also Forbes, plus a couple rest stops in the Pilliga. You can drive out thru the back of the RA s at Marsden (south of Forbes) and also Pilliga No 2 (south of Narrabri) into quite good bush camping spots. Plus Terramungamine Reserve north of Dubbo. So many places. I don't use the camps book anymore, just Wiki camps, Google earth and my own observation.
Found the best places when I was "lost"

Good stop at Mirrooll near the old hotel, buy a meal and stay for free, showers toilets etc. New owners and good chef.
Not stayed personally but came highly recommended while we were on the Newel.
Also Forbes free camp, stayed for 3 days, very friendly town and good meals at the nearby RSL. Water and toilets nearby. Get in early though for the best spots, can become a bit boggy after rain.

I drove up the Newell from Melbourne to Brisbane last week. It was a fast trip. First night I stayed at Grong Grong, 22km east of Narribri. Free parking behind the Hotel. They just ask that you buy a beer or a meal. Next stop Gilgandra. Stayed at the Showgrounds. $10.00 unpowered $15.00 powered. Call the caretaker number on the gate as you enter. Last stop Inglewood. Free camping on left side just before crossing bridge. Almost opposite Information Center.
