Hi all, has any one heard of using Nappisan as a sanitiser for the tanks, if so what is the mixing ratio, we have 2 black & 2 grey 240lt tanks on our rig & are looking for a cost effective sanitiser to use. We have only had our rig a month & the learning curve has been steeper than we thought but we are getting there, by the time we get on the road permanently we should be fairly competent but in the mean time we will have plenty of questions similar to this for you experienced Nomads.
The good wife recommends a good ECO friendly sanitiser from maybe BCF , Rays tents or a caravan dealer etc , probably better for the purpose you need it for. We got ours from Award RV in scoresby ( Burwood Hwy ) reasonably cheap.
Hi J & J, we use a generic brand of nappy soaker in our toilet cassete but it only holds black water for a maximum 5 days before emptying. During that time we would use about a cup of powder.
This would be different to your situation carrying up to 480L each of Black and Grey water which would most likely need chemical assistance.

Eucalyptus Pine O Clean (not the plain one) is great for toilet and down sink occasionally into grey water holding tank. Very pleasant odour.
About $5 for a bottle and we use about 30mm each time into toilet after it is emptied and washed. Then add the Pine O Clean turn upside down and inside out,,lol,, to coat ALL the inside surfaces of toilet holding tank.
Woolies have a cheaper version it was about $1.25 for 2l BUT we need about twice the amount to achieve the same results.
PS: IF on hot days you get an odour say after 3 days add some direct to holding tank (diluted slightly in water).

Hi Baz421,
Do you use the Pine O Clean as well as the toilet chemicals or Napisan??
Have just bought a van with ensuite, so not sure about all these additives.
Thanks,
Jan

We use Woolworths brand nappy soaker. A light sprinkle - about 2 tablespoons - every few days in each tank. Our tanks hold 150 lt each. Been doing it for over 3 years and works for us.

No Jan just Pine O Clean and we clean the bowl with it as well and flush into tank.
Cheers Baz

Generic brand (Home Brand - Coles, Woolies or Black and Gold) Nappy soakers, clothes soakers are the thing to use - I have just purchased a 2kg container of Black and Gold soaker at Foodworks in Monto for $6.60!!!!! Having been using the product for over two years, and never have a problem - the active ingredient that does the "breaking down" is sodium percarbonate - and you need over 30% to work best - the original napi san has only 26% - and the home brand ones usually have 34% - I wipe the toilet bowl and seat etc with eucalyptus oil, and drop a few drops in the bowl - a lovely fresh smell, nicer in my opinion than pine o clean, and a versatile product as well.

Hi Jules I'm a bit curious in what you are trying to "break down" and why?
Also I recommended Eucalyptus Pine O Clean and not the original as well for the better "odour control".
Cheers Baz

Turds & Toilet Paper are the usual things to 'break down' in a toilet cassette.
Shouldn't be tossing ciggy butts or other rubbish in it.

Yes but why are we trying to break them down,,, we dump them,, so why pay for chemicals to break them down,, any way 1 - 3 days in holding tank won't break much down.

1 - 3 days will break it down very well using Sodium Percarbonate, very cheap in generic brands of nappy soaker, even more so if the van is moving <pun intended> during that period.
We want to break it down to eliminate the odours, turds in a box in a van get rather whiffy as they accumulate for a few days. Bad enough when they are dropped in.
