A'van Aliner roof seals

Hi mates

Is here someone who can tell me how thick the foam roof seals of an

A'van Aliner are ?

If they have to be replaced, are there any alternatives or is it necessary to

for the original spare parts ?

Kind regards, Berni

Which seals are they Berni, are they the ones that are stuck to the edge inside the roof panels to keep out dust etc ????

If your local Avan store doesn't have them you could try a rubber/foam store like Clark Rubber;

 http://www.clarkrubber.com.au/whats-on-sale/catalogue-out-now.html

Best to get the right ones if you can from an Avan parts supplier as they have the adhesive already on it, just strip the covering off.

I bought some and replaced them years ago from a WA supplier, but I don't have the A'liner now.....

Me too. I know they are available from the Avan factory in Melbourne but they'd be top dollar.

Will pick them up from Avan Brisbane tomorrow morning. If I got it right they sell this stuff per metre and the price was something between 5-7 A$ per metre.

Two different sizes. Don't know how much I need. Might be 20m. Was told that they will explain how to do it best on my own.

Regards, Berni

Hi Berni, when I had my A'Van I replaced the dust seal with 20mm adhesive backed foam rubber from Bunnings, comes on about a 3 mt roll at a quarter of the price from the A'Van dealer.

I have replaced all mine,  Also on a few other friends Avans,  with the Closed Cell (Non Hydrogenous) type from Clarke's Rubber.   The original Avan fitted stuff was falling apart. It was of the open cell type like a sponge and absorbed moisture.

Where you cannot get the exact thickness required to fill the gap  correctly  and form a good seal.  Get two strips of thinner seal and (laminate) stick one on top of the other to achieve the correct thickness.   Like a 5mm and 8mm strip to make 13mm.   A tip I got from another Avan Club Member.

My van had gaps everywhere from the original seals not being thick enough.

Here a few things I have picked up on when doing this job.

Have a good look at the Avan with the roof up noting how well the present seals  actually seal.  No Gaps.

Do the same as above with it closed down.

Try  it at night with lights on inside the van,   and see if light is  showing though where the seals don't actually seal.   If you can see light so can insects.

Make a drawing of the present (original) seals in situ on each wall before removing them. Noting lengths and thickness.

Use Masking tape on the wall  to put datum marks on where the seal ends  and indicate edges.

Photograph each wall for reference before removing the seals.  As you forget very rapidly what went where.

I have  put  "W.D. 40" on the foam strips, about an hour or two before trying to remove them,    it "somtimes" softens the adhesive and allows it to just peel off.  Do a test area first maybe.

Clean off all residue adhesive  and wipe clean with meths or a similar spirit.

Try not to stretch the new seals as you put them on.

We travel a lot  on unsealed roads  and  having a well sealed van when folded  down and on the dirt,  is  a must have.

If I remember correctly from when I had mine, it also had a lesser (thinner) foam rubber type seals as well, I used house door seal stick on rolls from Bunnings to replace those.

I had a lift up side panel replaced by an Avan agent in WA once (long gone now) and it wasn't until a bit later I noticed they had not replaced the foam rubber sealing strips.   As they were a PITA to deal with, I just bought some myself and replaced it.
