Your Golflink handicap can be used anywhere in the country.I play for about 4 months in FNQ each year on numerous courses and in regular competition.Most,not all clubs are on line as far as handicapping is concerned,so just rock up,pay the comp fee and enjoy your game. The FNQ vets run a great weekly competition and play at a different course each week including Cairns ,Gordonvale, Halfmoon Bay,Atherton,Mareeba,Milla Milla and others. I am sure you will enjoy your golf wherever you go.Just remember to put your full golf link number on your scorecard each game and you will be handicapped automatically or manually by the club concerned. When you get to travel the Nullarbor get a card in Ceduna or Kalgoorlie (or Norseman) and play the Nullarbor Links Course. The worlds longest golf course.

The only requirement to keep your GA Handicap is to be a financial member of a golf club. It used to be that you had to play 3 handicap games a year but that is no longer the case.

Also heard from Golf Australia who said much the same.

They suggested contacting my state association for any cheaper options that may be available.

I may join a less expensive club than my present $1200 per year to retain eligiblity.

For anyone in a similar position, I'll keep you informed of any response from Golf Queensland that may be of interest.

We carry our golf clubs and play at just about every course we come across, if we have the time. Golf in the bush is very different to urban golf, many courses have sand greens, honesty boxes, 9 holes and lots of on course hazards. Most charge about $5 and we normally ring ahead to see if there is a chook run or play day, then we join in. Small bush clubs are always enthusiastic about having others play with them, one club we visit every year and use it as a base for a few weeks when working. Have some really great times with wonderful friends, golf, music, beer and party at the local pub of golf club.

We also steer clear of large population area clubs as they are expensive and normally to stuffy for a good time. Haven't had a handicap for many years and don't care about one any more, we do it for the enjoyment. Got asked at one club for my handicap, but they said 84 was to good for them.

Interesting club that would be very useful for those living around that area of Vic.

I have wondered why more golf clubs have not done a similar system.

Why not have reciprocal arrangements with a group of clubs in the same city where all members pay the same comp fee?

Two clubs around here have an arrangement for their members to pay a $38 comp fee.

Hardly an incentive to play away from your own club.

Last year we did a trip to the Dinosaur Trail and played socially at Mitchell, Blackall, Longreach, Winton and Charters Towers.

Couldn't agree more about the friendliness of country courses.

Met the President while we were playing at Blackall and got a great reception and an invitation to play in their championships!

Unfortunately we were moving on the next day.

Here's a tip for visitors playing in Western Queensland.

We found the best tee to use is a plastic bottle cap because you can't get a tee into the hard ground!

Drive carefully - on the road and the fairway.............

The latest - from Queensland Golf:

Golf Queensland offers the Queensland Senior Order of Merit (QSOOM), which is for males and females over the age of 55. In conjunction we also run Super Seniors which is over the age of 65.

QSOOM events are run throughout the year all around Brisbane and the surrounding areas (Toowoomba, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and a couple of clubs further North).

The below link will take you to the Queensland Veterans Golf Union. They will have their own competitions throughout the year all over Queensland. You will need to contact them for further details.

Yes, to play in these competitions, you do need to belong to a golf club and have a current handicap. However, Players are not required to play a minimum number of rounds each year in order to maintain their GA Handicap.

There are cheaper membership options available for example Palmer Colonial/ Gold Coast offer Mega Membership for $150. I have provide you with the link to their website (below). There are deals out there however you will have to contact the clubs directly or visit their websites as the clubs set their own membership prices.

I have found that some clubs, like Howlong, NSW on the Murry River, do not require a minimum of rounds to be played.
