This was taken from the NASA Observatory on 10 Feb 2014. The fire in east Gippsland (Goongerah/Snowy River complex) is almost as big as the whole of the area of Melbourne.
It is interesting that fires such as this get very little coverage by the news media - "It's only bush". Because these areas are not very populated and there are no people or buildings threatened there is no coverage.
There are many furry and feathered inhabitants suffering or killed though.
Cheers - John

Wow! What an interesting photo! You're right about the lack of news coverage about the fires RL. We've just travelled down the Victorian coast and rarely were we able to find out how big/what direction/status of the fires that were blanketing everywhere with their smoke. Now through Melbourne, and with a wind change, its the first fresh air we've breathed since leaving home in NSW last week!
Same with the Bangor in SA . It has been going since 14/1/14 and is now controlled thanks to some wet weather last week and has burnt over 30,000 hectares .
The Gippsland fire in Vic was burning some of the time while the Bangor fire was really going and there was next to thing on the news about the Bangor fire
