hi all deb and I are thinking of 6-7 days at longreach around easter would like a few opinions from people who have stayed there we want to see the local tourist sites do some fishing and in general relax, quite happy to pay for a site or free camp, open minded opinions welcome cheers
There is a free camp just outside town at Apex Park, right on the river, they have a big fishing competition there every year - not sure when .
I think the best thing was the sunset paddle steamer ride on the river, takes you to a drovers camp for dinner, jokes, poetry etc - really a good night. They will pick you up from where you are staying, and drop you back - not sure if it will be operating at Easter. The Cobb and Co. stagecoach ride was pretty good I hear.

I stayed at llfracombe caravan park when I went to Longreach last year as it was recommended by someone here on the forum and was a great place. It's not actually in Longreach but only about 15 mins east. Very nice park with friendly staff and great happy hours at the right time of year, a bit later than easter though.

Hi Deb and Gary,
I am writing from Longreach tonight, we come through here every year on our way to Katherine. Don't always stay here though.
We stay in the Tourist park almost opposite the QANTAS museum, a Discovery park, but may have changed hands. It's enormous, heaps of room, spacious parking bays, many are drive throughs, it has a dump point, and is very nice.
They gave us an "oldies" discount, so costing us $31.50 a night. We have paid more than that for pig sties in some towns.
Longreach is a beaut town, real outback, very busy at this time, and Easter will see the beginning of the next tourist season, you would need to book well ahead for this park. (I asked for a site two days ahead and they managed a drivethrough for us for two nights.) We leave tomorrow.
This park actually sells tickets for a grouping of four attractions, we have done them (separately over several stays here) and worth it, the Stockmans Hall of Fame, the QANTAS museum, a sunset river cruise, a stage coach ride, we haven't done that, for us bumpkins pretty boring, but very popular, I watched it arrive at it's depot once, empty, a real big "yee haa" and she came in at full pelt and slid to a stop right where I was standing. Just as if John Wayne (or Chips Rafferty) was driving it.
The town is well serviced with vehicle maintenance, IGA, various pubs, service stations, not a big town but has all the essentials. Well worth a few days and a wander around the main street.
I rang the Bridgestone Tyre Service from east of Emerald on Friday and told the lady we will need two new tyres, on my word, she ordered them in from Rockhampton and we had them fitted today. The price was good, too.
The Thomson River has the camp ground as mentioned, but after you cross the bridge at that site, turn right and there are bush camp sites along the river, unofficial I think, but looked OK, but for what you plan, the caravan park is your best option.
The trees along the river are coolibah, worth a look.
Happy planning,
Bevan
